At what point does a tournament usually get canceled? AFC Lightning tournament Jan 20-21 in Peachtree City. Saturday high 34, low 13. Winds 10-15 mph. We have early morning & late night games.

I wouldn’t count on any cancellations unless the weather is considered extreme/dangerous. They need that tournament $$$. It’s a huge part of a club’s budget.

I looked at that one to referee but when I saw the projected temperature and wind speeds, I was like nope! My son (who needs the money) is going to referee though. I assume it will be on unless the fields are unplayable.

Yeah, my guess is if it doesn't rain a good bit right before or during the tournament (making grass fields potentially unplayable with super-cold weather after), it will go on as scheduled. And it looks mostly dry between now & the weekend. Clubs are loathe to cancel tournaments unless they absolutely cannot avoid it.

Saturday morning 17 deg, 10 mph = "feels like" 5 degrees. I know the tournament doesn't want to cancel but does AFC or Peachtree City not have any weather policies? I couldn't find any. Has anyone played in weather this cold? I'm mostly worried about frostbite on toes as soccer cleats are thin plastic.

What happened with us was they moved the games to daylight. Still very cold. The refs also let the kids wear toboggans.

It seems they have no plans to cancel any of this due to weather, but they are expecting games times for some folks to move around and others where the referee is going to have to show up but they expect some to be forfeits with teams not coming due to the temps, but they are not going to cancel the tournament from what I'm seeing. Your only hope at this point is that any rain coming in today and tomorrow saturates the fields enough to close them which seems highly unlikely given how little precip. is being forecasted.

There is literally zero benefit to play in below freezing conditions. It's bad for everyone. The kids are focused on surviving, not improving their skills. Shameless money grab. And yes, I've been there as a player, coach, parent, and referee. Looking back, the efforts we went through to play in poor conditions (hot, cold, or rainy) were just silly. Stay home and play Catan with the family. Try again when the weather is more reasonable.

I was already a hard H-e-ll no on refereeing as were most of the adults friend I referee with, but my son wants the money (got a girlfriend and needs it...lol...) so he is going to layer up and be there for a few games this weekend. Hopefully all of his forfeit and he can just sit in his car with the heater blasting!

The really awful part is if any of this weekend’s tournaments could push back just a week, it’ll be in the upper 60’s and maybe low 70’s.

I refereed two adult women’s 7v7 games last Sunday morning. It was 27 degrees for the first kickoff but around 36 and sunny by the end. It wasn’t near as bad as I was anticipating. I shed a layer after every half and took the gloves off after the first five minutes. Ten degrees colder would be worse but dress right and you’ll probably be fine. I still remember the pain of getting hit in the bare thigh with a soccer ball in a 20-something degree game when I was about eleven years old. That sucked.

Current forecast for Saturday morning at 9:00 AM in Peachtree City is 20 degrees with 10mph winds (9 degree wind chill). High in the afternoon is 33 (23 wind chill). I mean, that's just stupid to play in, especially in the morning.

Thanks for the empathy and advice. Our game times aren’t too bad except a pretty late Sat game. Hopefully no one will get frostbite!

Our late Sat game was brutal. Players couldn’t feel their feet and I couldn’t stop shivering in the second half. I enjoyed watching my kid play though, she did ok! The results did not go our way but we weren’t too unhappy about not making the final.

Honestly, why do we allow clubs to schedule these kinds of tournaments in January? I keep saying we (the parents) allow this foolishness to keep occurring...

Honestly, why do we allow clubs to schedule these kinds of tournaments in January? I keep saying we (the parents) allow this foolishness to keep occurring... When did these tournaments in January start up? I have a U17 and a U14, both started club soccer at U10 and neither one has ever played a January tournament in Georgia. Presidents Day weekend in February is the earliest I can remember them playing in a tournament. Through the years both of their teams have started spring season practices the first week of February.

I also remember when we ended in May…now it’s year round. One would think with all this “extra practice” we’d be churning out a lot more professional players…

I voiced concerns and so did other parents. Coach didn't care. I've never done a Jan tournament before and I hope I never will again.

Use to start first week in February with the SSA tournament. Then Concorde girls, then Concorde boys. My guess is other clubs have moved to January to keep from conflicting with those tournaments.

Usually what happens in my kid's team is, that the team manager enters a tournament info into an app like (team manager, playmetrics, etc) and parents update their availability, if there is not enough quorum then team manager cancels it and looks for another tournament at a different date.

This AFC tournament is a new tournament. They have never had this one before. It was a smaller tournament obviously as I think they only used McCurry North and South and not any of the rest of the AFC affiliated parks like PAC. From what my son (who refereed it) said, the teams attending were mostly the higher level teams that tend to practice and play year round.

There are a couple of Friendlies that are popping up. AFU has one this weekend and I believe GSA is headed to TN for some friendlies up there.

Thanks for the correction. He only had higher level divisions that he saw and refereed at McCurry like MLS teams, and SCCL-Champ level teams.

Any winter tournament in Georgia is going to be hit-or-miss weather-wise. In 2017 in snowed about 6 inches the second weekend of December, which was the weekend after the GSA tournament, when the weather was nice. That's as early as I can ever remember significant snow here in my lifetime. In 2020 we played in an early February tournament (maybe SSA?) where it started snowing during our first game Saturday morning & snowed out the rest of the day. That might be the last big snow we've actually had here, now that I think about it. And bitter cold is pretty random too. Last year it was insanely cold (single digits) right around Christmas. This year is was in the mid-60's for most of Christmas week. Last weekend was brutally cold, but around the same weekend in January 2023, we were in the 70's for highs. So who knows. All I know is clubs will keep scheduling tournaments for whenever enough teams are willing to pay & play.
