Any insight on local MLS Next clubs for my 2013 son? Mainly considering Inter Atlanta, SSA and KSA due to logistics.
Do all MLS Next clubs also have teams in NAL?

For mls next expect lots of travel. At least one trip to Raleigh/Durham area. I cannot speak explicitly for those clubs but some train 4 days a week vs the standard 3 days. Yes all of those place teams in NAL. This was the first year for NAL so I cannot speak much about the competion.

You may want to check out the Big 5 ECNL clubs. Competition will likely be better. Those who got MLS Next were in lower leagues than ECNL. Good luck!

And the travel can’t be beat for first tier soccer. Six clubs in Atlanta and then 3 games in SC.

Firstly, the competition for MLS NEXT is excellent! For u13 - u 14, there are about 14 teams including 3 MLS Clubs. U15 and up includes 3 MLS clubs and 7 non-mls clubs.
They play in 2 different leagues, League and FLex (u15 and above) for a chance to make it to the MLS Cup. You get about 23+ games not including showcases. For MLS NEXT, it is mandated that they practice 4 times a week. The level has tremendously increased for the non-mls clubs. Showcases attract scouts from all over - Colleges and Professional. Showcases are very well organized and are streamed online for certain games.
If you are looking at SSA, KSA and Inter, note that Inter only goes up to u14. SSA and KSA go all the way. In fact, SSA's 2008 team last year was seeded #2 in the country. That was better than Atlanta United who was #26. One of the KSA strikers last year had the second highest # of goals in the country. Both SSA and KSA had players included in the "Players to watch" at the showcase.
KSA - Teams travel in a bus for trips. SSA - Does have an integrated College recruiting site and assistance. Both clubs are good and have their positives and negatives. KSA is expensive.
You should take distance into consideration for practice since these clubs are all spreadout.
Overnight travel games do not exceed 4 weekends in the entire year! Mainly to the Carolinas. Alabama is a day trip.

2 questions:
How do kids tryout/make it into the Atlanta United MLS Next team?
Is MLS Next "above" ECNL level wise?

2 questions: How do kids tryout/make it into the Atlanta United MLS Next team? Is MLS Next "above" ECNL level wise? Gotta be invited to tryout for Atlanta United. And depends on who you ask, but I’d say locally no. Most ECNL teams in Atlanta would beat most the MLSNext ones.

I agree that the Atlanta ECNL teams are better than the mls next teams. And the drop off in NAL vs. ECNLR where most second teams play is probably even bigger from a competitive standpoint.

That's a big assumption! 2 years ago that would have been accurate. Which age groups ? There are big differences between age groups. There are more ECNL kids who transitioned to MLS NEXT than vice versa. Unfortunately, there have not been any competitive games between the two leagues - just showcase games.
Agreed on NAL to some extent. That is still very new. SSA has some ex-mls academy kids on their NAL teams but that's not the case for most.
ECNL is definitely structured well and depending on the club some are better than others but really there's just 3!
Re:ATL United - you have to get invited. Typically, the MLS NEXT coaches have a pretty good relationship with ATL United as their teams are in the same league. If a kid from ECNL (or elsewhere ) gets invited to the YNT training, they have a good chance as well. The ECNL coaches can recommend them.
