New here and to girls soccer. My daughter is showing interest in club soccer after years of gymnastics. She has a year of rec under her belt and has been around the game her whole life since both her mother and I played. I have her signed up for some SCCL tryouts and curious how competitive girls is for SCCL. In other words, what are the odds she doesn’t make a team if she tries out?

lol that’s what I was thinking too. I just want to get her out of rec and let her hard work give her a chance at higher level competition.

Try to get her to any pre-tryout camps that clubs you are interested in might hold as well. ID clinics as well, which I know some clubs have for 2012's at this point. They say they are ECNL ID clinics, but anyone can attend, and there will be kids of all levels there. And those are often free. Those places are where a lot of the evaluation of new players to a club often takes place, prior to the actual tryouts.

Where are you considering having her tryout? As a player coming from one year of rec soccer, she really needs a club that is actually interested in her development as a player and not just her $$$. I’m just gonna come out and say it - stay as far away from Concorde as possible.

Dunwoody provides some good guidance here. Since your daughter has only had 1 year of Rec, you will be matching up against girls that have already had 4-6 years of club. I would make sure to measure your expectations and I would look towards some of the smaller clubs that will actually take a look at her. What area are you in?

Coaching once you get below the 3-4 team is a big question mark.

My younger son has been with NTH since pre-academy so we are at least familiar with that group some. She has been doing Toca for a few months to get her technical abilities more up to speed. Would love to know what clubs are truly interested in individual development because feels like that takes a backseat.

She's a hard worker with tons of individual drive (thanks to competitive gymnastics) so I am not worried about her first year matching up with girls with many years experience. I just want to get her out of rec and in club for a year then evaluate how much to push from there. Thought we had one more year of Academy before SCCL started which got me a little worried she wouldn't make it. Sounds like we should be good though.

I’ve heard good things about Ambush and Rush Union from folks, but no direct experience. To echo what a poster mentioned earlier, I’ve been disappointed with what I have seen at a few of the big five clubs. The focus seems to be on getting big and strong athletes over developing technical ability.

Then she is a stud athlete. If she has played rec for one year so she knows a little about how the game flows as a player, and she is doing Toca for individual skills, then she will be fine. Athleticism, drive, some skills will equal a spot on a decent team if you go to a club that has options. Tophat does work on individual skills but she is entering club at U13 already so it will be assumed she has skills appropriate for her team level. You likely won’t get any more skill development there or most other places. She will have to work on the skills on her own. Smaller clubs will be able and willing to spend more time on it, but make sure you pick one that has enough teams that she gets on one that is appropriate for her. I agree that Santos is a good idea for where you live. Since your son plays at NTH you can ask his coach for an opinion. He may have some inside knowledge on the coaches in her age group. BTW I watched the U11 NTH Smyrna team the other day and they were quite good. Maybe someone can tell you about the 2012 team.

I’m kinda stunned that people are recommending taking her to Roswell from Smyrna. That ain’t close at all. NTH and SSA are the places to tryout IMO.

I’m just gonna come out and say it - stay as far away from Concorde as possible. Can you expand upon why? Sure. Concorde is a big brand name in club soccer, which attracts a lot of kids. That creates a lot of teams at each age group. If you’re a rec player going to play club for the first time at any age above, say, U11, it’s not an ideal place to get developed or get good coaching. They don’t have enough good coaches to cover the number of teams they end up with because of the club’s popularity. Someone new to Concorde either needs to be an established club player who is coming in at a high level and is already known by the Concorde coaches OR a very young academy player who is getting in at the ground floor like everyone else. I agree with whoever made the point above that all of the big clubs are like this to a certain extent but Concorde, IMO, is the worst. We have friends who play or played at Concorde and were very happy. But the majority of them started there very young. I just don’t think a U13 player who’s never played club should start their club career at Concorde. At this point she should find a smaller club that is interested in developing someone at her age. And yes, I have a kid who spent 2 years at Concorde.

Since your daughter is 2012 all teams are still practicing. Best way to get noticed is to go and practice with them. If she is rec, she is not locked into the May 1 open season training. Find a few teams you are interested in and reach out to the coach to see if your daughter can practice with them. Bonus is you can see how they coach and be able to understand how your daughter measures up.
