Get ready! Get ready! Get ready!
4 Huge matchups this Monday evening. Let's break them down.
Walton (home) vs Campbell: Both teams have Power 4 commitments that will play significant minutes. I have seen both teams play. Campbell is a little more direct than Walton. Both teams have strong midfielders. I predict Walton will win. However, if Campbell can get an early goal, this could turn into an upset.
Buford (home) vs Hillgrove: Hillgrove is still the biggest surprise team in the tourney. They are fast, physical, and crafty. Hillgrove is more tested, having won Region 3, which still has 3 teams in the elite 8. Buford is the favorite here and should also be boosted by playing at home. I haven't seen Buford play, and last week's score makes me nervous about their ability to handle Hillgrove's pressure and physicality. I predict Buford will pull it out in PKs.
West Forsyth (home) vs North Paulding: West Forsyth is undefeated on the season. North Paulding enters the match as the 2nd of the 3 Region 3 teams to advance. I am not sure North can score enough goals to make West nervous. North's best chance is to lean on the defense and pull out a couple of set-piece goals. North will challenge early, but I see West pulling away late.
North Gwinnett (home) vs Harrison: North Gwinnett enters the elite 8 after winning two nailbitters in the playoffs. Beating Lambert and Mill Creek was no small feat. Harrison has only one loss on the season and looks to keep up their winning ways on the road. Harrison's win over Brookwood was not as close as the 3 to 1 score indicates. Harrison scored two goals in the first 15 minutes and was never really challenged after that. There will be tons of talent on the field, with both teams sporting multiple college commits. I predict Harrison will pull out a tough win on the road in a hostile environment.
If you have Monday free make it out one of the 4 games to see some amazing soccer.

My reply on the previous post on 7A!
Campbell vs. Walton - Walton should come away with this one. Overall better talent on that side. Campbell's AM is their best player and scores a lot of goals but it would take a team effort to support her. I believe this will be very one-sided.
Hillgrove vs. Buford - Buford should win but that 1-0 win against Milton kind of makes me question them as to what's going on recently. Hillgrove has had some good wins against teams that are still in the playoffs: Harrison (1 win and 1 loss) and North Paulding (in both matchups). Although they've had some easy games recently, Hillgrove has had some time to get some target practice and tweak things. It's a possibility they could upset Buford.
North Gwinnett vs. Harrison - I got my money on Harrison. Not knowing much about North Gwinnett, but it looks like they grinded out of the both rounds of the playoff. It could be something that can work in their favor though. Harrison's only loss was to Hillgrove and that was because of a GA tournament. I would think that a North Gwinnett win will be a huge upset if they win.
West Forsyth vs. North Paulding - Looks like West Forsyth is coming back into form a couple of years after the two sisters have now moved on to play professionally. Their only loss was in the preseason to Roswell and that looked like it was a really deadlock matchup. They look like the better team by their schedule. North Paulding has loss to both Hillgrove (both matchups), Harrison (both matchups), and Buford. West Forsyth played Hillgrove and won 1-0. I feel like West Forsyth should have no problem in this game.
Final Four Prediction: - Walton vs. Buford - Harrison vs. West Forsyth

Buford 2 - Hillgrove 0 Walton 4 - Campbell 1 West Forsyth 3 - North Paulding 1
Looks like Buford will host Walton in a rematch of a game from earlier in the season, and North Gwinnett will travel to West Forsyth.

North Gwinnett ref gave pk call with 25 seconds left to decide game.

North Gwinnett ref gave pk call with 25 seconds left to decide game. 1. Doesn't GHSA selects the officials? 2. The keeper has a history of fouling players in the box leading to PK’s. One doesn’t have to look back too far only a week since it happened last. Very unfortunate it happened when it did but it was the correct call.

Absolutely the worse call ever. There is another thread talking about the refs, but the officiating in this contest was bad at best. Lets see with 26 seconds left the CR gives a PK when the keeper gets the ball first. If you have to stop and debate with the AR for 4 minutes. The AR who was 20 yards closer to the play CLEARLY did not agree with the call... Sigh... All I will say is NG was fortunate to still be in the game at that point. If Harrison (90% possesion) finishes their chances in 1st half and early 2nd this game would have been over. NG low block worked. Playing all 11 players below the 30 yard line worked. The 2nd half adjustment was to be more and more physical and put it on the refs. IT WORKED...

I wonder what the call would have been had the player not scored.

Couple things when slowed down, the keeper didn't get the ball first. However, the keeper did make a "fair" challenge on the ball and wasn't reckless. Shouldn't have been a PK. The attacker kicked the ball to the side, but I can't tell if the attacker flopped or not, but it was fair challenge on the ball though. What really makes this bad is first, this shouldn't have been called, I wouldn't have. Second, the center ref was a good 25-30 yards and had a terrible angle to see this. Third, it wasn't a four minute discussion btw, it was a quick minute maybe less and the CR went with what AR saw and the AR was shaking his yes as well. In the end this should have gone to OT and not been a judgement call to me.

I will say the 25 second PK, I honestly don't think it should've been called. It isn't the same as the rest listed above, the others for sure PK and fouls. This one to me I don't think so now. Watching it numerous times.

As others have stated the keeper made similar play on first goal and in prior matches. If you have a history of something and the refs know this they will look for it. Guess the keeper could have redeemed themself and saved the pk.

But, when you have history I can see why this call was made to an extent.

But agree AR had a much better view. Also agree that Harrison had the better of the first half and should have finished several chances so it didn't come down to this. Crappy way to end a season.

Problem solved. Player crossed the ball and the keeper made a play on the player without the ball. Bang bang play but right call as contact was made on a player without the ball. No different than a field player going in for a tackle after ball is played and getting a foul called. The location was impactful but call was right.

Crazy how that works.

As I'm watching this video over and over, they teach officials to anticipate rather than react. In the video the center official clearly reacted vs anticipated this play. It's just a bad optic of reacting and being 30 yards away to make this call, that doesn't look great. Had he been 10-15 yards closer it's more credible and he probably wouldn't have gone to his AR (maybe).
In the end was the correct call made? I say yes, but people will have their opinions and that's fine too.
But, what everyone will probably agree on and is part of the reason why people talk about refs (sure there could be bad calls), they need be in position at least to make these calls and not 30 yards away.

No different than a field player going in for a tackle after ball is played and getting a foul called. The location was impactful but call was right. Who was the cross to though? No one was there. I think the attacker knew the keeper would get the ball and quickly "passed" it to no one, to get a PK. The keeper clearly went for the ball, was already in motion before the "cross". Wrong call imo but it was tough esp with the history. Also what happened with the defender running back, how did she fall? It's hard to see. I guess she tried to kick it and then fell.

Slowed down it looks closer than I originally thought. This feels like the UConn vs. Iowa foul. Maybe it was the right call, but a game-winning decision in the dying seconds is always gonna turn heads. I also really disagree with the idea that because another PK was called against the keeper in a previous game refs should be paying closer attention to her in the following games. It seems like a recipe for bad refereeing IMO.

Looks like keeper was a step slow and took a not great angle due to defender falling down at the last second but the forward went in looking for contact. Really tough call but probably the right one.
