If a kid wants to try and play at a higher level do they more than likely need to change clubs? It seems upward mobility within a club is pretty limited.

It depends on the club and the level. Some clubs are good at moving up players and some not. Our experiences (girls) have been that UFA moves up some at the academy ages when kids change a lot but very little once they reach U13/14 and shooting for the top two teams. Tophat more movement. AFU more movement. This is with multiple kids over a number of years and coaches so it maybe biased by ages and circumstances.

My kid, 9, moved from Academy to Premier last season and Premier to Elite this season, both in the middle.

In my experience younger kids get moved up/down with a lot of frequency but as you get older it gets more difficult because they think they know you.
My son had a few growing years (u13 to u15) and dropped down a level. As he grew into his body he had to change clubs to get a new look and move back up.

I have rarely seen kids get moved up during the season. Maybe one between fall and spring. Some clubs let kids fill in on higher during the season but again thats a few games here and there. Through try-outs, that's a crapshoot depending on who is coming from other clubs. Some clubs prioritize current players, some do not. I personally relate it to a job, it's easier to get a promotion moving than staying.

my experience is once you become U13, it's difficult to move up in season because the team roster was decided by tryout. but you get chance to play up as guest player. eg. 2012 player for 2011 team, or sccl player for dpl team when they have injury or need subs
