Depends on the age. You can teach skills easier than you can teach smarts and a true understanding of the game. At a younger age, I'd rather have soccer IQ and have them work on their skills. At an older age, if they don't have the skills yet, the Soccer IQ won't be as helpful. I would be curious what College Scouts think about the two. I would think that at least some would recognize the Smarts and feel confident they could improve a player's skills, but I am way to far removed from that to know what they are thinking;)

I agree the skill development would be the easiest to teach but What's the best way to teach smarts and overall game knowledge ?

I think that's one of the reason our country has a hard time keeping up internationally. We just don't watch soccer on tv!

Which would you prefer (not both) a smart not very athletic player or a skillful athletic player not a very high soccer IQ Skillful and athletic are two different things. If your implication is that they are naturally skillful then I would take that every day of the week. That's something you cannot easily teach. Soccer IQ and teaching skills to the athletic player are things that come through development, experience, playing and coaching.

Skillfull all day. For instance Zidane,Ronaldinho etc are skillfull players. Its very hard to teach those things they do. The other thing you learn along the way or emphasize on it. For instance Mueller or Drogba are not very skillful players but very smart.
