What is the general consensus on ODP in Georgia? I assume that most selected players are from the Atlanta area due to the depth of talent and coach familiarity with a lot of the ECNL and MLS Next players, but is favoritism largely given to returning players? Are the same players typically rostered for each event, or are opportunities spread evenly?

I can only speak to our experiences on the girls side of Georgia ODP.
- At the younger ages, we never knew of anyone getting cut from the pool. Actually as the year went on, there were typically more and more players added. - At older ages there were definitely cuts. A lot of the players in the pool came from Metro Atlanta. I'm not sure if that is because of talent, more players in the area, or people not wanting to travel up to Atlanta for training all the time. - When we were involved, I would estimate 75%+ were from non-ECNL teams. This is mostly because GSA, Concorde, AFU & UFA didn't push ODP or even make mention of it a lot. Most of the players we played with came from Inter Atlanta, Roswell, Ambush, AFC Lightning and All-In. - Returning players definitely had an advantage during tryouts and at the beginning of the year, but it tended to even out as the year went on. However, I will say it really depended on the coach. - Event rosters were dependent on the coach. We had a coach one year that did his best to spread everything evenly. We had another coach a different year that definitely had his favorites.
Overall for us ODP was a good experience. It was extra training with different players and different coaches. Unfortunately I know people that had the exact opinion and thought it was crap. I think it all depends on what your mindset is going into it.

In my daughter's age group, we had a few folks who would travel in over an hour for training. My daughter was a trapped player (most girls she played with were a year ahead of her in school) and we found ODP to be particularly helpful the year that club stopped being year round due to high school. Other girls went and played high school, but she didn't have that option. ODP was about the only way she could get a full field run in the spring and have decent 11v11 training to go into tryouts in May. Once she got into high school, she played ODP for one more year then dropped it - club and high school were enough.

1. If you play for or associated with a club that has a national or even a regional league, there is no need to do ODP. You will get plenty of recognition from your league games and showcases.
2. Many that have been around for a while remember ODP being the pathway to colleges and national teams. I would venture to say no one makes those teams solely from ODP.
3. ODP is okay for those that want extra touches and do not have national or regional exposure with their club team.
4. Clubs are all about marketing themselves to gain numbers. If they stand to gain from something they will push it. Affiliation with international clubs, specific tournament performance, playoff qualification and so forth. While clubs will not always push ODP coaches from local clubs sometimes coach ODP and will use it as a way to get in front of talent for their club.
In conclusion if you would like extra touches and it’s not too much of an inconvenience go for it as nothing bad should come from it.

Kid played ODP and ECNL. Kid enjoyed the extra training. Luckily, our kid had a great coach and learned a lot as it was a different coach who had different strategies. Kid particularly enjoyed the week at the U of Alabama and the fact that 8 or 9 of the ODP team were also on his club team (they were a really strong club team). This has been years ago. Like all opportunities, a player gets out of an opportunity what they put into it. Good luck!

Here’s a different perspective - If your kid wants to play College Soccer, it is a good addition to have. Even if he/she doesn’t intend in playing College soccer, it is still great to mention it in the Extra Curricular for the College.
As far as the talent pool, there is a lot to choose from but MLS Next players can’t participate unless they are not primary players.

Do some clubs make exceptions to that MLS Next rule (or maybe it's a coach's decision)? I'd heard some of the MLS Next boys from AFC Lightning were allowed to participate in ODP.

There's two tryout dates. So maybe after the second day of tryouts?

How long after tryouts does it take for offer emails to go out? The first group of selections/invitations will be sent out later this week. From my understanding they are only taking a handful of players after the first tryout. Anyone not receiving an invitation this week is encouraged to return for the 2nd tryout date.

We were at the 2014 girls tryout on Sunday night. From my recollection, the coach in charge mentioned that they had "preselected" a set of girls through scouting and likely from the previous year that would be accepted this week. The remaining girls should go to second tryout in early Sep. This was our first experience with ODP and I thought the vibes were great. There were some seriously talented young women there and that talent honestly ran deep through the players in attendance. Good work parents and coaches!

I can tell you I know of a few girls that were not a part of the program last year who got offer emails yesterday, which includes my own. And I know of girls who were on it last year, that didn't get invites on this round.

Check your spam folder, my email engine sent teamsnap addresses to the spam folder. We got the invite after 3 days of the tryouts.

I would also like to know when the email goes out for the 2013s if they made the team. How selective is it at this age for girls?

Have the 2009B been notified yet? The 2009 Boys tryouts concluded the last week of August and as I far as I know those that made it were extended an invitation for the coming year.
