Read the response then scroll up to the original comment. This applies to parents, coaches and spectators just the same. ALL feedback needs to be positive. Otherwise you’re perpetuating the problem of not enough refs. www.reddit.com/r/Referees/s/SlCdQDdtve

Tbh if I see an AR at a game sprinting down to actually be in line with the last defender (rare in all games that I have seen at HS level and at SCCL but was standard at my older kid’s GA games) I usually compliment them. Honestly my kid complains of embarrassment if she hears me, but I do it anyway. I tell her that all people like to be told that someone recognizes when they are putting in an effort to do a good job!

I used to go out of my way win or lose to thank the refs after games.
However one time when I was walking by / up to the refs to say thank you one of the refs looked startled that I was walking up to him like I was going to get aggressive or physical. I said thank you and walked away but there must have been more going on with the guy to react like that.
Since then I just leave the zebras alone. It's a tough job no need to make it harder for them.

Kid probably had something happen the week prior (with a less than friendly experience). Abuse is rampant.

I make it a point to say thank you to the refs after a match if I see them. Even if I think they did a poor job I will still do that (and leave it at just thank you). I don't search them out to do this though, just if I walk by them on the way to the car or somewhere in the park.
I think the issue with ref's isn't the younger refs. Most of the younger refs my sons team has had have been strong. It is honestly older refs that are an issue. Two examples of that from this year are: 1: I ref who would only walk and would hardly ever leave the center circle 2: An AR who spent 20 min of the match on the phone. He didn't even use air pods or ear buds. Just holding his phone up to his ear as he walked the sideline

Most of the younger refs my son’s team has had have been strong. It is honestly older refs that are an issue. He didn't even use air pods or ear buds. Just holding his phone up to his ear as he walked the sideline Thank you for this post. I believe, after playing for many years, the referees are the real heroes of the game. (Coaches too). I found myself a few years ago, after criticizing the refs at our son’s game and knowing better, ashamed of myself for acting like a putz. So I took my wife’s advice and got my license. Reffed a game today actually. Although I don’t referee many games, the experience has given me a new perspective, some well-needed humility, compassion and an increased love for the game itself. Plus a little cash for a charity we love. So before ever yelling at a ref again, take my advice, get licensed, and walk a mile (or 3) in their shoes.
