Figured I'd wake up to multiple threads about the game last night - the world cup champ with the greatest soccer player that has ever lived, and the benz rolls out a 1/2 a** field with clear seams and a painted surface to hide the issues. I was not their in person, but you could tell at times the ball bounces as if it was on a turf surface. Clearly the sod was not laid properly and not given enough time to become playable3.
it should have been the best possible surface known to man, showcase the benz and the grass they can and will have for the world cup in 2026, instead, it looked terrible. granted, i think their turf looks terrible on tv also.
Just seems like the benz only cares about keeping concession prices to the leagues cheapest prices.
other odd thing, apparently they were mandated to make the field smaller because of site lines? haven't read much more about this, but the field was about 5 yards shorter in both directions.
at least it was an entertaining game, should have been like 10-1.....

Yea its clear the turf was not good last night. I am not sure who owns putting down the grass. The grass for previous time (premier league games last summer) was much better. It was much better because it was actually 6 yard wide rolls and thus fewer seams. Last night was not good visually, but most inportant not good physically for the players.
The only difference between this time and last time is a different partner. Did the leaders of the Copa America skimp on field development monies? Is Mercedes Benz responsible for the field? Big questions that should be answered before world cup.

I was up pretty high, but I didn’t see a single issue with the turf as an observer. I didn’t see any turf get torn and folded up like you see sometimes with small pieces. So I was a little surprised to read about the turf this morning. I had no idea it was an issue within the game at all.
My petty complaint on the other hand is that they continued the MLS Mercedes-Benz tradition of stopping the game clock at 45 and 90 and not showing injury time. I find that annoying and was hoping that it would be different for this event.

I wonder if his load balancing will kick in next time the team has to come play us...

COMNEBOL was in charge of all decisions from what I’ve read.

I find that annoying and was hoping that it would be different for this event. They don’t stop the clock anymore at 45 and 90. They count injury time up and have this season just like TV does so that must have been a Copa America decision. I went to the She Believes Cup at the Benz which was grass and it wasn’t perfect but it did not fold up like it did in the Argentina Canada match. So not sure what the difference was.

According to one of the pundits during last nights game between Argentina and Chile, it wasn’t just the turf that was off at Mercedes Benz…apparently the fans at the Benz were as well. He went on to say the atmosphere at Met Life was superior…
