I realize asking about smaller clubs is sometimes pointless on this forum, but here goes....
We're moving in-town and considering moving my 2013 son from a top 5 program to Inter because my wife and I can't justify driving an hour each way to/from practice four times a week, plus games on the weekends. Does anyone know anything about the IAFC 2013 squad -- I've been told it will be in MLS Next next year. It looks like last year they were respectable for a smaller team in the top SCCL 2013 division, and it's early, but they got smoked at the GSA tournament 6-NIL and struggled a bit in their first two games. And they didn't lose to a top club (sorry AFC) and CF 2013s didn't play in the GSA tournament this year. So...is this a problem with the Inter team's new coach, or did the team lose people and not re-load? Any intel would be helpful.

They hired Saxon, Head of Academy, away from Concorde just a couple of months ago.

No intel but the landscape changes year to year. Playing 11v11 vs 9v9 is a major factor. Rankings, wins and losses are great but I think that it ultimately comes down to good coaching and individual development under the auspices of the team. Sometimes this could mean that the top team is not always necessarily the best for the development of each player.

Don't have direct experience with the 2013s but I have a younger kid at Inter. My sense is that the club is really focusing on building up their top teams to make them more competitive. Hiring Saxon from Concorde seems to be a step in that direction.
I think the coach of the 2013 team you referenced also coaches the 2015 Blue team and is new to the 2013s. Someone with an older kid can confirm. His 2015 team was competitive in the GSA tournament and lost 3-2 to the GSA North Premier team that beat CF Central Black in the final. I anticipate the 2013s will improve this season and be competitive.
If I were you, I would consider Inter. It's not worth spending spending an hour each way in the car unless your kid is a superstar at a Big 5 club. Also, is Inter considered a small club by the Big 5? Around 2,000+ kids tried out for Inter teams this year. Maybe that isn't as big as NTH, but I wouldn't classify the club as small.

I dont have any experience with the 2013s and has been several years since I have been associated with the club. Having said there have been lots of good kids come up through the Inter ranks and it is well run. Since your son is a 2013 you will be fine to evaluate the club for a year or two and determine if it is still good for his/your needs. When your son gets closer to high school you could always reevaluate "bigger" clubs. NTH boys at the top level practice at Franklin Gateway and that is only 20-30mins from intown. CF boys also practice in town some days (AIS, Dunwoody).

Three big losses in a row to some second tier teams. Maybe the new coach isn't as good as the old coach....

The clubs that got MLS Next couldn't compete with Big 5 ECNL Clubs.

I don’t have a kid on that team so I can’t say for sure. My main point to the OP was that Inter is worth considering unless their kid is a future ECNL superstar.

While I know nothing about this team you have to remember these boys are all still 11 and some may even be 10. I know of another 2013 team who one week lost 1-0 to a team and then next week won 2-0 against a higher level team from the same club.

With my son coming from a smaller club and now playing at one of the big 5; there are many times I think the big 5 feel this way

No info on Inter or even boys. However, as someone who spent years driving way too far to practice - stay close to home. Have a life. It's not worth it. Let your kid have a life in his school and your neighborhood. 8+ car hours plus practice time = no other life. Sure, some diehards will say do it. From our family, looking back, no way. We would have been better served staying with the local club than chasing the Big 5.

I have mixed feelings four years after moving to a bigger club, but not about leaving Inter. Unfortunately, that leaves a drive for those of us living on the east side.
