My son has been asked to guest play on his old team. While i'm not sure if he even wants to do it; if he does, do we need to ask permission of his current team. They are not in the same league, and he would only guest play if there are no conflicts with his current club. It would only be 2-3 games and possibly a post season tournament depending on when it was.
I have a feeling if we asked his current club would say no, not because they don't want him playing more but because there is no love lost between the two clubs (adults getting in the way of whats best for kids). His current club (large club) would love to see this small club go away. We have zero desire to go back to the old club, but at the end of the day we want them to succeed as we feel that more choice is better for everyone. I am not saying that his old team will win because he will play for them just that they will have more bodies at times.
I also don't want to upset his current club as its never good to be in the dog house.
Any thoughts?

It is on the team asking for the player tovguest play to reach out to his current team coach/club for permission.

I would not if you're happy at the new club. If coaches & teammates at the new club found out, they could start talking and thinking that he wants to go back to the old club. And he could get injured.

Once you sign with a club you are committed to that club for the season . You would need a release from your current club to go play for another. I’ve never heard of a player playing for 2 clubs at once.

Guesting for a tourney would make sense. Guesting for league play of another team doesn't make a lot of sense unless its Atlanta United asking...

If you’re in the same league or association then yes you’ll need to get your current clubs permission and his player pass. If it’s different leagues like Ga Soccer/NLP in the old vs SCCL in the new then no, old club would have to just register you on the team to get a USYS Pass. ECNL/RL and SCCL are separate as well so pretty much the same thing. NPL is under USClub so they may be the same as SCCL or under but separate like ECNL is.
If there’s conflict of interest of being in the same league then I wouldn’t worry about asking the current club as the old club will have to provide the player pass anyway. That’s pretty like the playing sports for your school then, and do you ask your coach for permission to do that?

My kid has guested with teams within their club and with teams outside their club.
Guesting with teams inside your kids club is fun as long as both coaches are aware. Also understand that when you guest with a different team the expectation is to win + that your kid will deliver.
Guesting with a different club is something you need to be extremely careful about. Typically your club will think that your kid is one step out the door if they're playing with other teams. Also you'll quickly discover that grass isn't always green on the other side of the fence.
My kid scored the winning goal in a major tournament while playing up for a different club. The coach leveraged the win for a DOC position. Instead of offering my kid a spot on their team a parent group of 4 players from my kids current team did a package deal to the other clubs coaches team. With the stipulation that my kid wasn't offered a spot.
The other club coach took all 4 from the package deal and didn't offer my kid a spot. This caused all kinds of drama between the clubs which went all the way to our club president making coaches hold meetings with parents explaining that guesting with other clubs (in our local geo) was not allowed. Basically everything went crazy.
This was all 3-4 years ago. Since everything went crazy 3 out of the 4 players in the parent package group have quit playing and 1 begged to come back to the original club. The club that we were guesting with was absorbed by a larger club and the coach that leveraged my kids win into a DOC role was demoted to a regular coach only.
