With the Phoenix Showcase coming up, some of us parents have been talking over the last couple of weeks about how many recruiting eyes do you get on you if your team is ranked low in the conference and thus end up on field 100? It seems that the higher ranked teams get the lower number fields 1-10 and it would seem that most Big College Coaches are only going to go to those fields and not walk all the way down to field 100 unless there is someone specific that they want to see. The basic thought is that unless you are on a higher ranked team then you might not be getting the eyes on you that you want or at least fewer eyes. As a result, are you better dropping down to Regional and playing on the top team and thus, get more eyes?
Interested in peoples thoughts!

FYI I only know the girls side of recruiting so this may not apply to boys. I have 2 daughters who were successfully recruited to P4 schools. Rankings, records, and club matter. Higher ranked teams will be seen by more coaches. You are in ECNL so you will be seen.
College coaches are smarter than we think. If the school/coach has recruited from your club and previous players have done well they will go back again and again. Make sure to do your part to email coaches 2 weeks before the showcase to attempt to get on their radar.
It also matters how many players on the team are emailing them. It may not be the biggest factor but it does matter.
Also please note that coaches will prioritize the players who are actively being recruited now. So 25s and then 26s and then 27s.

In my experience with boys ECNL, field number/location does matter. ECNL tends to put the “big games” up front on the more “feature fields” and that’s where the scouts tend to be. Easier to stay at the feature fields and watch lots of good players, then search in the back for field 17a to see that one kid on a lower regarded team.

I'm sure the field, and thus the quality of the team & opponent do matter, but so does emailing the coaches. While the elite will get recognized and recruited, most players need to get themselves on the radar of the college coaches by doing the legwork themselves.
As to dropping down to Regional League to play on a potential top team, and be one of the better players, I don't think is a great plan for recruiting purposes. ECNL events have a lot more coaches attending than the ECRL events do. So, more than likely the player will still get more looks on a lower tier ECNL team than on a top ECRL team. As a point of reference, the most coaches our ECRL team has ever seen at our games in a weekend was about 40. In the same age group, our ECNL team typically had 40+ coaches at each game.

I cannot speak about ECNL as my child was at Tophat but I imagine it is the same at GA events as it is at ECNL ones. The coaches are going to be attending the high level games in greater numbers, but they will be at the games if you send in emails. Those emails should include a good highlight video. Maybe you even have a social media account and you announce your schedule there too. I think what collegiate level you are trying to playing matters as to what league you should aim for also. ECNL or GA will open most doors (depending on the club), but if you are looking for D2 or D3 then ECRL/DPL is ok also.

In my experience and I have friends that coach college... College coaches are at showcases to watch players that have already reached out to them. The coaches have seen their videos, perhaps even had a phone call with them. They have been pre-qualified. Rarely do they just stumble upon a kid from watching that they want to pursue. They just don't have the time to chase players that have not expressed interest. Be proactive, reach out to the coaches you want to watch you at the showcases!
edit: I would also add showcases in areas that you have no interest in attending college would be a waste for most.
