My daughter got hurt in a game over a week ago. We are on day ten of crutches and she still cannot bear any weight on her left knee. The incident was just a true sports 'accident' - nothing intentional, no foul and the other team's player and teammates were very sportsmanlike and wished her well as we carried her off the field. It's nice to see the players being gracious even when the parents cannot.
Anyway - MRI is scheduled for tomorrow - I'm really worried this is something bad and considering she's a high school freshman who was really really hoping to play there, if this is serious enough to keep her out of that in January, she'll be devastated - already had our share of tears over the possibility.
So prayers, positive thoughts, good mojo, and no serious strains/tears to her knee vibes would be greatly appreciated tomorrow. We get the MRI read on Thursday at the follow up if not before but no matter what, we'll know by the end of the week. She's missed two game already and no way she's playing on Saturday - that's more games than she's ever missed since she started playing at 6 years old - she is NOT a happy girl right now. And this soccer mama isn't too thrilled either - hate seeing my kid upset and out of commission - she loves playing this game and I love watching her play.
Thanks! I'll keep y'all posted on what the diagnosis is!

You got it. It's so difficult to see your child hurting both physically and emotionally.

Prayers and positive thoughts coming your way, Spectator! The good news is that kids heal fast and they are able to handle injuries these days faster than ever. Here's hoping it's not too serious!

I hope all is well.have they given her a brace. My daughter hurt he knee about a year ago. She wouldn't have been able to walk without the brace, but got rid of the crutches once they put a brace on her. Like you, we were worried the injury was season ending, but it ended up being about five weeks. That was a long time for her, but we were all relieved it wasn't longer. Here's hoping the MRI finds something relatively minor and she's back on the field soon.

Good luck with the MRI and hopefully nothing more than ice, stretching and strengthening in the weeks ahead

MRI Update - we wont have the final diagnosis until Thurs but the MRI Tech showed me a few things:
No visible detachments or tears to any ligament Some fluid still at ACL and LCL but that's not uncommon Huge bruise to the bone on the outside of the knee - most likely the source of the pain and inability to bear weight Some inflammation at outer meniscus - best place to have that - heals faster
She said not to hold her to anything because she's not an MD but she's been doing these for 15 years and knows what she knows Hearing and seeing no tears or detachments was the good news. Hopefully she can heal up before high school tryouts. The Fall season is most likely over for her though. Three more games plus post season tournament - doubtful she will make those but we will see
Thanks for the mojo!!

I have had a torn Meniscus surgery and its not bad at all. 6 weeks back on the field with good PT. The ACL and LCL different story and hopes its not that. At this point if not anything serious rest and PT is a good recipe to get ready for high school. Fingers crossed and good luck!

Final diagnosis - good news bad news. Good news - no tears, all ligaments are in good shape, no cartilidge damage - all moving parts are in good shape Bad news - kid freaking BROKE her knee! nondisplaced nondepresssed fracture of the anterior aspect of the lateral tibial plateau. In laymans terms - the top bone mushed the bottom bone when it hyperextended so hard it dented it, Crutches for 3-5 more weeks - no weight bearing activity. Follow up in December - then we know if she's out of high school tryouts starting in January. She is not a happy camper to say the very least. Lesson learned - this never would have shown up on an x-ray. Only an MRI would have shown it and had we not found it, she'd have had problems with this knee later in life - recurring problems. So as sad as she is about possibly missing her first year of playing high school soccer - at least when she's 20 years old, she'll be able to walk up stairs and not have her knee give out. As big a pain in the butt healthcare and insurance ban be - don't mess with knees and ankles if your kids get injured. Everyone have a great rest of their season - we're done here!

I am so sorry to hear it was worse than you hoped. I don't even know what to say except that the time will go by and she will heal. It's so hard to see them miss something that's important to them and something they are looking forward to. It's so hard for players to escape injuries, and they never seem to come at a good time. Hang in there.

This is a bummer, but way better than some of the alternatives. Don't cheat on rehab!!!
Can't believe the high school coaches wouldn't give an injured player a chance after healing. Could she do swimming and pool running to stay fit? Seated juggling? There all kinds of first touch skills she could do seated. On ground and in a chair.

What a bummer indeed!! I hope some things Zizou suggested can keep her spirits and skills up. Let her know all her invisible friends are cheering her on!

It really was a freak one in a million injury. Even the doctor said it'd be hard to recreate. Two players doing what they do - playing the game hard and fair. shizat happens. We ( she and I) will be joining a gym with a pool this weekend and I'll get her on a bike and in a pool (I was a competitive swimmer in m youth so it's momma's turn to show her my sport). We will do non weight bearing activities until she's cleared. High school tryouts are contingent on her getting cleared - her knee needs to last her longer than these four years. Still sucks but she will be fine. She's a strong kid and this is "but a flesh wound"

I have actually seen this injury in soccer players a few times, although not to the extent of an actual fracture. It seems to be very common to get a very painful bone bruise in this area from the femur. It has happened to two girls on our team in the past year. We have had really good success with LLLT (low laser light therapy), which many Physical Therapy practices have these days. Good luck!
