Based on Fall standings they will decide SC seedings correct? How are the teams split up?
1 5 2 6 3 7 4 8
or
1 8 2 7 3 6 4 5

Based on Fall standings they will decide SC seedings correct? How are the teams split up? 1 5 2 6 3 7 4 8 or 1 8 2 7 3 6 4 5 Little bit more complicated there are 4 groups, top 4 teams (I am assuming you have never been to SC so there are no PLE or RPL teams to worry about). These are the top 4 in Athena A / Classic 1 the groups then break down to 1 8 9 16 2 7 10 15 3 6 11 14 4 5 12 13 Depending on how many teams apply for SC depends on how many Play In games there are. If the season ended today then SC would look like this Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 TH GSA AFU UFA P NASA CFN SSA CFCent UFA Nor TH Navy Chiefs Red Star DSC GSA Red SAF Inter
Now if UFA Red, Santos & Ambush apply then they would play off against
GSA Red v Ambush (winner gets 14th seed) SAF v Santos (winner = 15th) Inter v UFA Red (Winner = 16th)
Whatever happens enjoy Columbus, yes it's a pain to drive to but the trip will be what you make it not what people tell you it's like.

My daughter played as a guest but I was not involved at all in how the seeding worked...so very new to this. So if teams that don't qualify based on seeding want to go they can displace the bottom ones if they beat them in play in games? Interesting!
I personally wish it wasn't in Columbus, seems most of the teams are metro Atlanta and wish it was closer to home. I don't know why they don't do it like the Atlanta Cup and get fields from everyone...it was also very hot lol

Parents hate Columbus because they only have 1-2 kids to worry about. On the other hand, administrators love it because it takes a lot less manpower to run one big venue than several smaller ones. Because of what the tournament means, there has to be a lot more oversight and to have it spread out all over the city would makes it a logistical nightmare.
It is also good for the coaches. In many cases, coaches have 2-3 teams playing in Sate Cup. It is easier to get from game to game when they are all in one place. There have been times when coaches have been granted slight schedule changes to accommodate them. There have also been cases where time changes could not be made, fields were charged so the coach could have both his team playing side by side on adjacent fields. Some clubs also use the extra coaches who are between games to scout other teams.
And finally, the referees like it. The referees stay down there in the Columbus State dorms. It is helpful to have them all together and somewhat isolated from everything else. If there is an across the board problem they can easily bring all the refs together at night to meet and talk about it.
So for the parent who does not realize all that's involved, it is a pain to go to Columbus, but for others it is actually a blessing.

Nicely done - dreaddy! Great clarity.
Any willing (bidding) venue with enough parking in metro Atlanta that come close to allowing the Administrators and Coaches the convenience that Columbus provide?
Lastly, what is your take on timing - here are some advantages that I can see:
State cup at end of fall season: (1) cooler weather (2) players are match fit / top of their games (3) better club chemistry (U15-U18), and less HS potential related injuries
State cup Memorial Day weekend "as is": (1) guaranteed field conditions (no icy or frosty fields in Dec-Jan) (2) champions are match fit for regionals in June and Nationals in July (3) recruiting grounds for Coaches and Parents to prep for try-outs 1-2 weeks after state cup
I'm neutral with current setup ... Just want to get other's take while clarifying dynamics and options.

I had thought it was pretty much determined that State Cup will move to Lake Pointe in Cherokee County when those fields are ready.

There's a lot more to it than just fields. Lake point will have to match Columbus ion a few other areas as well. Number 1 is cost. At the moment their field rental is exorbitant. Will they be willing to match what Ga Soccer pays to Columbus? Next thing is volunteers. Columbus provides a huge amount of volunteer manpower. Can they match that? There are a lot of other things that Columbus does that anyone else will find hard to match.
To soccerpapi's question on the timing of state cup. It used to be right at the end of the Fall season. There were two reasons it was moved. First, rosters are locked once you play your first state cup game. It's a little easier now that club passing is allowed, but back then it was a total, absolute lock. There times when a team was strong at the end of fall but had a few injuries during the HS season. They had to go to Regionals with what was left. They couldn't add anyone to their roster. Moving the games to May allowed teams to replace players injured during the HS season.
The second reason was the reasoning that the teams which were hot in May would represent the state better at Regionals. The first year we moved to May, we had a dramatic increase in Regional success. There may have been other factors as well, but that convinced the powers that be that the right decision had been made.
