Since I am new to Athena, I have a stupid question. I noticed on the rankings in Soccer in College that my daughter's team * This team is one of the 'seeded' teams in this age division.. What does that mean?

From Sinc website:
If a Team has an asterisk that means they have a seeding.
1 asterisk means they have a State seeding.
2 asterisks means they have a Regional seeding.
3 asterisks means they have a National seeding.
How are these rankings calculated?
Our ratings are completely objective. They are based solely on team results in league and tournament play. We currently have over 350,000 games in our database and recalculate the rankings every morning, since new games are added every day and old games drop off.
We "seed" the rankings with the State, Regional and National tournament results and then run through all of the games at least a dozen times to establish the base for each team. Team A can beat B, B can beat C, and then C can beat A to make a simple calculation impossible. We don't use simple tournament outcome which can have so many variables depending on which teams participate and we don't use "experts" which can be biased and not give the proper credit to teams in smaller clubs.
You are assigned a rating based on the rating of your opponents and the results of the games. Your ranking may change at any time, even if we don't add new results for you, since your competitors rating may change based on new results for them or their competition. So just beating a team once won't necessarily put you ahead of them since all of your results and theirs go into the national placement. Only games against ranked teams which are the same age/gender that occurred within the past year are included in the calculaion. Recent results are weighed higher than older results.

on a side note, i had asked SIC a question about the rankings for u9 boys (yes, i know u9 boys!!) i don't specifically care about the rankings, but its nice to see how teams you have and are going to play have performed against similar opponents. and of course its informative for tournament bracketing.
essentially, the season started and their were rankings for this age group, then they disappeared. the entire system will now be driven by VIP members seeding teams at the younger ages, identifying a handful of teams, that than start a measuring stick for others essentially.
From SIC: There have been changes made to the ranking system so that rankings for our younger teams are more relevant.
Ranking is irrelevant without seeding, and at the older ages, we use USYS State, regional and national results.
Team X beats Team Y and it means nothing in a ranking system unless we know the relative strength of the teams.
For the younger ages, we are depending upon our SincVIP members to create "virtual tournaments," and are currently reaching out to them to get us more data on the younger ages to fill out the rankings so they are meaningful, and relevant.
Virtual tournaments are not available for the older teams, since we have solid, objective, and verifiable results.
If the teams have not participated in the State, Regional, Nationals, their ranking situations have changed.
I hope this helps explain the changes.

What does that mean? and now that you are in athena, SIC isn't really of any value except for tournament bracketing. results rarely get entered in except for SIC tourneys.

Lol..like u say it doesnt matter much anymore but our Travel Dad likes posting them...were only u13 so it may change in the future. I like seeing the scores and when you enter certain tournaments and you havent played some teams it pulls from there to show you teams in common that you have played so you have an idea. Also we still enter sinc tournaments as well
