I'm not super knowledgeable about soccer beyond Academy, Classic and Athena...what age does soccer beyond these levels really start? U12? U13?

Here is some more info about ODP: www.georgiasoccer.org/odp/odp_frequently_asked_questions_faq/And here's what they say about ages: The ODP age group refers to the year in which a player was born. For example, players born between January 1, 1998 to December 31,1998 are classified as 98’s. For the 2014/2015 seasonal year, the following age groups are eligible: 98's, 99’s, 2000's, 2001's, 2002's & 2003's. Players born in 2004 are too young for the 2014/2015 ODP year and must wait for next year.

ODP starts at U12 as long as the player's birthday is within that year - a 10 year old playing up on a U12 team would not be eligible. RPL used to only start at U14 - now it's U13. I can see ODP starting younger too eventually based on the hyper competitiveness of some parents in the sport, they'll have kids in diapers trying out for ODP!

What are the preODP camps, and is it necessary that your child attend one? I'm talking about the ones that are supposedly invite-only.

The players selected are often first evaluated at the club level. Most of the 2002s that made the team last year attended the preODP camp. Based on your user name, I'm going to assume that your kid is a goalkeeper. They are not invited to the camp (at least they were not for 2002 and 2003) as the coaches do not include them in the club-based preODP sessions.

i think the original intent was to identify the younger side of the calender year so those kids were not at a disadvantage, but i think it just morphed into invited players from the entire year with no focus on the birthdate.
the only negative i heard from this year was -- it was hot!

Never heard of pre ODP camps...What clubs out there tend to get the invites? I'm sure it's someone in the know looking out for kids, but I know my club doesn't do squat with ODP or the soccer beyond classic or athena.

If youre in a big club, JD will go to your club and evaluate for pre-odp camps. They also speak to coaches and get recommendations for them. Pre-odp is not a must to make ODP, I know kids that went to the camp and didn't make ODP and vice versa
