Looks like coach covered all his bases getting someone with local flavor that knows the club scene as well as anyone. Then hiring someone he has worked with in the past and feels is a well respected keeper coach. Sounds like a pretty positive start to me.

i say its a good hire for an assistant coach for sure. bring in someone with connections in the local area, understands the process. first job at any state school in any sport, is try to keep your best players in state! don't let other teams poach them.
now lets hope UGA develops a true identity and a quality style of play.

I am sorry, but this sounds like a head scratcher to me, much like the hiring of Lesesne in the first place. You have a brand new head coach, no (substantial/notable) previous head coaching experience, taking over a major D1 program in a power conference, and he hires a guy who has been a Club coach essentially his entire career as an assistant. I could see this if the other coach was a more senior person with deep knowledge of the college game generally, and maybe the SEC specifically. But that is not the case. Maybe Lesesne is trying to make immediate inroads with the Georgia youth soccer scene for recruiting purposes, but (1) that seems like it should be secondary to knowing the college game at this point, and (2) that would only make sense if you were hiring someone who was universally loved by the Georgia Youth Soccer community. I can see the Ely choice. Lesesne has a history with her and she has been coaching at the college level at good places, even though she is young.
Please tell me coaches come from a lifetime of involvement in youth soccer, albeit at a high level, to the college ranks and do well on a regular basis. Please give me some examples of where this has happened at (what should be) top level college soccer programs. Otherwise, I see this as just as curious as this head coaching hire in the first place, and fear that UGA is going to be doing this all over again in a few short years.
Hopefully I am wrong and all this turns out like a wonderful fairy tale with UGA standing on the podium at the College Cup in a few years!

i'm still surprised they couldn't pry another successful coach away from a lesser school as the HC. I think UGA is a sleeping giant, no reason its not them and the Gators at the top every fall. i'm way too distant from the college game to understand the inner workings - roles and responsibilities of assistants etc especially on limited travel budgets.
i can't vouch for BM's coaching ability, but i'm sure given his experience with ecnl for many years, he knows who the majority of the quality players are in the south east and where they play and has developed many relationships with other club coaches.
only time will tell, i think uga had/has a talented roster, i just harp on their style of play. U-G-L-Y. made ya wonder what they did at training everyday.

I am not much for Gossip. That is why I did not belabor a few issues before. The only reason I am bringing these issues up again is because they re-emerged in another location that I have always thought to have respectable people that seem to care about their reputations (much like this forum).
First issue: I had mentioned hearing that Randy Waldrum was at the top of UGAs list. There is a recent discussion on another forum (no, not THAT forum), another actual reputable soccer forum, suggesting that Randy Waldrum actually had discussion(s) with UGA to be Head Coach but the deal never progressed because he wanted his son Ben (also a coach with the Houston Dash) as an Assistant Coach. I obviously do not know the details, do not know how far discussions had progressed (could have been one phone call for all I know), and do not know whether this is true. What I find interesting is that people would be discussing this issue now when there is really nothing to be gained (meaning why would they lie at this point?). Interesting food for thought. How big of a coupe would that have been?
Second issue: In the same thread there is continued mention of the Holeman firing having more to do with the players than with the coach and the coach's performance. I was no fan of UGA's style of play, but this issue had been mentioned repeatedly in the weeks after Holeman was relieved of his duties. There was an interesting observation by one of the posters saying that UGA lost to UCF and the coach got fired. Wisconsin, AT HOME, lost to UCF in the next round and the coach got an extension. Maybe some of those players are modeling the USWNT. Maybe there was some practicality associated with hiring a club coach who knows many of these young women.
