saw this story. i watch a lot of college hoops throughout the year and saw JP tokoto play last week. kid is a pretty amazing athlete. stumbled on this story today, and didn't realize he used to play soccer. when he was 15, he had to choose between soccer and hoops. well he chose hoops. hes 6'6". His grandfather played for cameroon national team. soccer was in his blood. he credits a lot of his footwook and abilities to look up while dribbling to soccer. i can't find anything how good he was on the pitch, but shows the difficulties of keeping an athlete like this in soccer. yes, hes just one player, and yes, he might not have been good, but he could have been the next great US center back..... I think soccer will continue to be a 'gateway' sport for the competitive kid into sports for all types of athletes. I guess the hardest thing to figure out, is how to keep them in the game. the story opens with this comment "or continue to pursue basketball, the sport that seemed to cater to his height and blossoming athleticism." Not saying its true, but its hard to argue with. a lot of your top college players in all sports (qbs, pitchers, point guards etc) are freakish athletes. combine freakish athlete with soccer skill and IQ, wow ---- your probably talking about a ronaldo, zlatan, bale. dailyorange.com/2015/01/tokoto-chooses-basketball-over-soccer-displays-natural-athleticism-for-unc/

So many of the current Spanish Tennis players, played soccer too when growing up. Heck, Rafa has played exhibition games with Real Madrid. John McEnroe used to play soccer in the off season when he was young as well. The footwork in soccer is great cross training for a lot of sports, and vice versa. I love it!
