We were at a small club during Academy so we rarely played Concorde or GSA. Not slamming the clubs, the reason for the funky scheduling at Academy is because it's on each club to create their schedules not the state. So when a large club like Concorde or NASA that has multiple Academy teams per age group needs to schedule for each of those teams to play, it's easier for them to schedule with other clubs that have the same number of teams for that age group than to piecemeal it together and have half their Academy play one team and half play another.
We did tons of friendly weekeneds with CESA in Greenville SC. Fun quick out of state trip for the team and good competition. But there were weekends when our only games were against the age group above or below us in our own club.

GSA,Concorde,SSA,DSC No Gwinnett teams other than GFC all games were against small clubs . And when I moved my son at U11 to a bigger club I realized how far behind He was compared to the other kids his age because of lack of development from the former club .

At Tophat we schedule all the local big clubs, the challenge is that we have five to six teams in most age groups and most clubs don't have that many, so we may play two different clubs the same day and our fourth, fifth and sixth teams may play the first and or second team at a smaller local club.

Our club only really plays the big clubs because they have to schedule multiple teams, the whole club would play a diff club every week. Theres clubs that I didn't even know existed until a couple of years ago

I don't think we played Lanier at all, TSC or RYSA. Most were on the northside of the perimeter

Definitely helps shake up the competition so you don't play everyone. And you get to see other facilities and clubs without the fear of recruiting. You mind me asking what small club that was?

And you get to see other facilities and clubs without the fear of recruiting. You mind me asking what small club that was? East Cobb YMCA. We went up there at U10 - Fall and Spring and U11 in Fall. We had three teams at U10 and two at U11 and crammed a bunch of games into a single day on Sunday. We'd go up Saturday and play Sunday then come back. Fun trip - great memories and most of all - even at U10 - highly highly competitive teams. (I think in two years we won three games up there). But definitely worth the drive. Another club that may be willing to work with you for some out of state friendlies is Vestavia in Birmingham, AL. REALLY nice folks there from when we've played their tournament. Worth calling someone to see if they'd be willing. Good luck

Pre-merger at TYSA we saw a pretty good mix of big and small clubs: CF, NASA, GSA, SSA, AFU, TopHat, Dacula, TSC, DDY, GFC, Inter Atlanta, Cherokee, Griffin, RYSA, Blue Springs. I don't recall seeing Lanier, Rush, AFC, Alpharetta, UFA, Smyrna.

I don't remember playing against RYSA, Cobb Strikers, SSC, East Cobb, or MAYS. All other clubs we have scheduled regular season games against.

For various reasons (99.5% of it being concorde having issues) our club hasn't played concorde norths academy program in 3 years. We added concorde central back in the fall, but not playing them in the spring. It is the same teams pretty much every year-- UFA-Fowler, SSA central/west, One of the GSAs, both NASAs, AFC and then 4-5 additional clubs added. Haven't played lanier in ages even though they are part of the alliance.
Others hit the nail on the head, fine line between balancing bigger clubs with smaller clubs. I think tophat and ufa fowler have always done a good job a that, where you will see a mix of opponents on a given weekend. ufa-eagles is now also part of scheduling so our club has about 4-5 teams in each group, and parents to get "pissy" when the acadmey schedules are not balanced for all the teams.
I personally would like to see a few more friendly weekends though. I'm of the opinion at the younger ages, these kids can play a game every sat and sunday and want to. now some of the parents don't want to but, the kids do. that also comes at a cost -- more games, more ref expenses and most importantly more time put in by the coach.

Pretty much the same here... Most larger clubs will play other large clubs just for the scheduling benefit. You can always scrimmage. Maybe not the same as an official game but does give you a chance to compare how your team matches up. Sometimes the team manager can help get that ball going (with approval from coach). They can contact the other teams manager and see if they would be interested. Or what ever your coach says to do.
I would like to see a better mix as well.
