US not the only one wondering - what if Spain's other top athletes played soccer. soccergods.com/2015/02/16/what-if-spains-best-athletes-played-soccer/Spanish brothers Pau and Marc Gasol started at the center positions in yesterday’s NBA All-Star Game, combining for 16 points and 22 rebounds. In the wake of the country’s failure at last summer’s World Cup (failing to make it out of group stage), it’s a shame nobody’s asking the obvious … What if, instead of to the court, the Gasols took to the pitch instead? What if the creativity of Ricky Rubio was used in a midfield instead of a backcourt? Or what if the tenacity of Rafael Nadal or Ruben Fernández was harnessed on grass instead of clay or the roads. What if Spain’s best athletes played soccer? It’s a truly scary thought.

Ours NEVER will if there is no plausible chance to play against the best in the game. If the domestic Pro league plays during the wrong season. If your "best" players can play just a few months/year in college. If the Pro league can't figure out that you must be a selling league until your quality is on par with the best. If the same league places players not by development or by acquisition, but by ping pong balls weighted toward parity.
(parity is for closed leagues protecting their profits above all else, not for raising the level).
I also think world class soccer players would do as well in other sports if they had opted for something else.
