Yea. That's disgusting. Hence the nba's flopping rule.

The whole federation was sanctioned and fined for various events surrounding that match. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/10/03/fifa-issue-reprimand-costa-rica-forward-joel-campbell-simulation-world-cup-qThis might be one that mars a player's career. This was so highly publicized, so blatant, and so over the line, that FIFA actually took action, no matter how ineffectual that action seems on the surface. How often do they actually say anything? He will be known for this decision, I am confident of that. Joel Campbell has been a European footballer his entire career. The Gunners have loaned him to Olympiacos for the season. How likely do you think it is Arsene Wenger will have this guy play for him after this? Wonder what will happen if he ever wants to come to MLS? Agent: I have a player, Joel Campbell, very effective forward, European quality footballer, looking for a change of scenery. MLS GM: Joel Campbell? The player who took that egregious dive against the USMNT in the WCQ and got Matt Besler suspended? Agent: Well, I don't know if i would call it a dive exactly .... MLS GM: ... I think we are fine with our attacking options right now. There should be anti-simulation (anti-cheating, anti-fair play, whatever you want to call them) clauses in players' contracts. Hit them with a non-trivial proportion of their income. Sad that it seems necessary to take such action to get players to be sportsmen, but when entire federations act like Costa Rica, what do we expect?

While I'd like to believe this could change his career, I seriously doubt it. Look at his coach's response. All he cared about was that the US might have used an illegal camera to record the cheating. And for that matter, look at history. I'm picking on Suarez today, but only because he's an easy target. Here is a guy who clearly dives and flops all over, but also bit someone. Then he ended up on one of the biggest clubs in one of the world's biggest leagues. This is a club that prides themselves on their reputation. Then while playing for them he bites someone again, and somehow he's still playing for them. Nobody cares about reputation, they only care about results. I'd also argue that for the most part, only US fans get seriously upset about simulation. Others may chirp a bit about it when someone does it against their team, but other than that, it's here today and gone tomorrow. Note I include myself in the list of those that get upset.

Tides turn slowly, yes, especially in results-oriented businesses like top level football. Coaches should take a stand, they could be the biggest help. A player sits because he acts like a fool, gives another player a chance, and who knows what might happen? When this crap occurs, if the coach wold take out the player, send him to the dressing room, publicly ridicule him in the post-match press conference, that would have an effect. You dive, you are out. Even if the referee won't send you off, I will says the coach. People seem to forget that graveyards are littered with irreplaceable men.
I may be dreaming, but I am a bit more optimistic. The managing director of Liverpool publicly criticized Suarez, that is something. And they were still playing okay without him. Granted, they put him in the starting side as soon as he was available, and they are way better with him! It has become so disruptive to the flow of games that I think even Serie A fans are getting irritated.
By the way, there must be some diving camp somewhere. You notice how these guys always grab their heads, no matter where they get hit? Campbell was so confused he tried to grab his head but realized he was feigning a foot injury so was trying to grab both simultaneously!!!

I don't like it either. Especially don't like all the fake injuries near the end of games by the winning team to run out the clock. Always grates on me. Took my kid to a Silverbacks game and asked her if she learned anything. (ball skills, passing formations, etc.) and she said "I learned that when someone trips you, shoves you or just bangs into you just the slightest bit to do some kind of acrobatic move and collapse to the ground". Nice. LOL
