There was not 300 people and everyone I talked to saw it the way the video showed it. The football post is above the soccer one and its not that big a deal. Ball was out end of story
In regards to the 300 or was it 3000, next time, i'll remind myself to put the letters JK or a smiley face so "everyone" knows when i'm being facetious. Being that you are heavily invested in UFA, it's a safe bet to decipher that "everyone" you spoke to leans towards UFA. I will say for the record, I was not there but I got my information from UFA parents too. Having said all that, how in all that is decent in futbol can you say the football post being so close to the regular futbol goal is not that big a deal? Honestly, this post and all the comments has proven that it clearly is. It got a coach ejected and to some has re-galvanized the rivalry between two of the biggest clubs in Metro Atlanta. BTW that was not a facetious question, I'm genuinely curious if someone can explain to me how "its not that big a deal?" ...FG
Its only a big deal to the CF dad who told us "the real story". Its above the goal, not in the way, if the ball hits it, its out, no different than the ball hitting a parent on the sidelines...should we remove them too?
The coach got ejected because he didn't know how to control himself. It has happened to UFA coaches too.

I did not play soccer growing up but is it normal to have both goals so close? My babies are too young to play on this type of field, but I have to agree that this may be a problem in the future. I think the "other" referee made the right call. but what if the referees all get it wrong, what can a team do? I think there should be a way to remove the American football goals during soccer games, it just seems too close to the soccer goal. My 2 cents

An argument for this not being a "big deal":
There are no standings or records in DA. DA has mentioned multiple times that they are not looking at results of games and there is no promotion relegation. Worrying about this goal counting or not is simply worrying about the result of the game which DA doesn't care about. If the result of this game is a big deal to you as a parent, I would have to wonder why. How did your kid play? Did he get quality playing time against tough competition? Did he learn anything on that day? If his playing time was cut short because of the forfeit, I would be upset at the coach for not keeping his cool. Being upset at the field setup or the refs getting the call right would just seem like a silly waste of negative energy. I think a civil discussion with the coach or questioning the coaches temperament would be ok especially if he's lost his cool in the past. If not, maybe he deserves a pass and everyone moves on. But, again, the result of the game doesn't matter. These kids are being evaluated on an individual basis and this call doesn't change any of that.

Sorry, I meant to say the football goal being there is a big deal. I completely agree with you on the fact that the results of this game don't mean a thing. I'm talking about in the overall scheme of things. So this time the refs got it right, what happens if the refs don't and it affects these same two teams next year when the results do count? Not sure what can be done since the football goal is more of a permanent structure but I see this being a potential issue in the future.

I've seen this similar scenario played out in a high school game without all of the dramatic aftermath. I think there is only one person in this thread that thinks the ball can hit the goalpost or a moose and the goal should still count. It's an easy call to make. No worries.

Parents on the sidelines really need to watch that tape to hear how they sound on the sideline.
Not to make excuses, but its an issue with lanierland -- the fence is very close to the fields, and unless you sit in the bleachers, parents really have to stand up along the fence to watch the game.
Its good and bad, it creates a great atmosphere, but than also makes it like a freaking hockey game!

Had a parent of the other team we played this week walk up to the ref's after the game and take their pictures and tell the ref that he took a picture of his car license as well. This was an away game so ref's were theirs.

Okay that is crazy and is bordering on stalking & intimidation. This is why myself and other parents have to be take turns at being at the fields when our kids referee games.

That is almost worth sending to the club to let them know. That's actually disturbing and I'm sure the club would be interested in knowing that information.

I often think we should put a camera on the parents instead of the players. It might shame them into behaving.
That’s creepy about taking pictures of the refs. Crap like that is what causes so many refs to quit. Be respectful and maybe they’ll stick around long enough to become really good refs. Ask to be copied on the emails from ref assigners desperate to fill all the games and you’ll see what a big problem it is.
And one last random thought... if our high school team got a point for each time they kicked the ball between the goal post and the cross bar they would have been hard to beat .
Now get this: The AR that had previously made the straight red send-off call on CF stopped the kick-off for a meeting with the CR. Now, he was over half a field away with the sun in his eyes - not a joke: he was holding his arm up and couldn't even see anything in front of him at this point in the game, and there were no UFA parents or players wanting a call. It was a mystery.
Not that it makes a huge difference in the end, but having watched the video I believe almost the entire UFA team was outraged, arms in air, swarming the ref, looking for this call.
It just goes to show that our memory of things can often be tainted by various things, including memories of other plays that may have happened on the same day.
Funny stuff here. It does not seem like anyone here is interested in even talking about the game itself even though there is video available along with people that claim to have been there, instead we are talking about the High Drama

Not anymore, since their argument is moot CF parents have moved on to complain about the forsyth fields and the football post. At least we have fields.....

The subject of the discussion topic is literally “high drama”.
I skipped to the minute in question and have not watched the entire video. TBH, I’d love to see more links to DA game film shared here.

My son is a young R9 level referee. He also plays on his select team. He centers recreation games up to U12 and academy games at the U9 level. He also AR's some older games.
I used to go to every game he had to make sure there wasn't anything crazy happening, but a few weeks ago I didn't stick around and he centered an Academy game and the coach of a particular club actually got in his face and his personal space and told him to call fouls (which in my son's opinion were not fouls). I'm not going to name the coach or the club as a report was filed, but what paid adult coach gets in a teenager's face like that to intimidate? Then of course his parents feed off that and they get worse as well. The coach is lucky I was not there for that game as it would have escalated quite worse than it did had I been there. Its sad when adults act like children.
Does my son make mistakes, yes and when I used to come to all of the games I would make mental notes of the mistakes and we talk about it to make him better. When I say mistakes I mean a missed foul here or there or who a ball might have went off of or a handball he didn't see because of a bad angle, nothing really serious. Good thing is he has very thick skin and usually ignores a lot before it gets to him. You need thick skin to be a referee.

Sad that the soccer community has lost sight of the fact that these are still kids. You would think that someone would speak up from the parents sideline. What we did when ours refereed was to take a page out of the carpool model. We as parents would agree to schedule our times so that at least one of us was always at the field to head off any kind of shenanigans that might go down with crazy parents and coaches.

At academy level it shouldn't really matter anyways.
But it also depends on how egregious the missed or wrong call. If a bad call or lack of a call changes the course of the game, it can be very upsetting to half of the other kids playing.
IMO The MOST important thing at the academy level IMO is teaching the kids fairness and good sportsmanship, without those you teach a lot of kids to be bitter/hateful of referees and teaching them that breaking the rules has advantages (you just have to learn what a referee will allow). Innate fairness by the referees is crucial to kids enjoyment of the game.

We all as parents must realize referees will miss calls and interpret plays differently, not all referees are the same. Some refs will call things tight, while others will let things go more often. It is up to the players and teams to adjust to the referee as they are to adjust playing against each other.
I've seen blown calls and I've even seen game changing calls. I doubt referees are out there favoring one team over the other. In the end we should support these referees especially the younger ones. They are truly doing their best, and it is sad that some parents and coaches take it too far while interacting with referees. One too many times I've seen a kid cry or shaken up after a game because of the verbal abuse they take from the sidelines.

In this particular instance with my son (and I caveat I can only go by what he, other parents, and the home coach saw and told me) is that the game was physical with a lot of shoulder leaning etc..., but given that my son plays select he knows that type of play happens all the time and it isn't a foul as long as the person is trying to play the ball. So this is where his experience as a select player in other games helps him in his referee experience and training for being a referee as well.
The home team was winning pretty handedly and was the more dominant team. This probably had something to do with the away coach in question complaining as well since his team wasn't doing so well under the pressure and more physical play. The parents and home coach both said he called the fouls that needed to be called and let them play otherwise. So I am going to take it at there word that is how it went down. This coach in question tried to start it up in the next game he coached as well but the center in the following game was an adult that had already heard about what transpired the previous game and told him any more from him and he would be gone, and then he quieted down. In reality this particular coach obviously thought he could intimidate a young referee into getting favorable calls, and it didn't work, and not only did it not work he got a report written up on him as well.
Other than the fact that I think my son should have given him a Red and not put up with I think it all got handled in the aftermath right. He has a lot thicker skin than I do, I can tell you that, but honestly I think him not giving a red was because he was fearful and intimidated by the guy getting into his personal space. I don't know how many young teenagers are going to card an adult like that. I would think they would fear it would escalate further if they did.

That's why clubs need to have adult field marshals available at all venues. Very rarely is there anyone in a position of authority from the club around to deal with issues like this. I've stepped into that role just as a parent or off-duty referee to calm down a coach (just wearing a club jacket somehow conveys authority). This weekend I stepped off the game I was working (as AR) to deal with parents on the field next to me giving the young female AR some grief. Why the center didn't deal with I don't know, but I fixed it and went back to my game.
Clubs need to step it up. Also, home coaches need to do a better job of protecting the home referees from abuse, whether it's their game or not. And I don't mean influencing games, just standing up for the young referees when they are under duress.
I often think we should put a camera on the parents instead of the players. It might shame them into behaving.

And a camera on the coaches. Many of them are embarrassments to themselves and their clubs. I feel so badly for kids who have joystick coaches who also belittle the kids, scream at the referees, and generally try to make the show about themselves.
In most replies it is the same spiel. The comments make it sound like there are NO bad referees. Frankly there are MANY BAD referees. I am ok with that if they are consistently bad for both teams. My concern with a referee is when there ineptness puts players health and safety in danger. No excuse for that and no one on this forum can defend that.

There are bad referees. Three steps to fix: - report bad referees, with specifics, to the assignor - I do it all the time. Also pass along good performances. Best way to protect my badge is to weed out the bad ones or train them up. - support younger referees, stand up for them, encourage them - recruit more players and parents to join us!
It's important to differentiate between a bad referee (no interest in game, misinterpretation of laws) and an under-trained referee. One can be fixed, the other, not.

I'm not saying they don't care about rules, misinterpretation of rules, etc. There are just some bad referees and no matter what you do they will not ever be a good referee. Again my point is when the safety of players is jeopardized they need to go. Unfortunately I don't see this happening. I'll leave it at that.
