This could spell the end for ECNL as a platform for getting into quality colleges. As of now the Tophat DA team is really the only show in town for the big 5 unless you are interested in Ga State or Columbus State ect. LOL!!! This move by TH going all DA guarantees TH will have no depth. There are only a small percentage of girls who are very good AND don't want to play high school. So, TH will lose those girls who want to play HS. Meanwhile, other girls who are on the TH DA bench will have a tough decision. Do I play DA w/ TH and then at U17 drop to the DA Development team which is clearly a second team league? Or play ECNL which has top clubs just like DA, stay on the same team each year, don't get banished to DA Development and get to play high school? Say what you want but DA and ECNL have neutralized one another. They each of a solid amount of top clubs in the nation and then some very questionable clubs. I can tell you that the DA model has not delivered as they thought. They wanted combined teams and had to give in on that issue. They lost great clubs requiring them to compromise with mediocre clubs. Next will be a 60 day hiatus during the DA season to allow high school play. That may tip the scales.

The girls in the new DPL league can play high school.

Tophat will not travel to the left coast for games. Florida, the Carolinas and Virginia. All of these games will meet in neutral/ half way fields. There will be 2-3 tournaments that coincide with DA tournaments. Maybe one in Texas and Disney.

They lost great clubs requiring them to compromise with mediocre clubs. Next will be a 60 day hiatus during the DA season to allow high school play. That may tip the scales. Since the only combined year now is the U18/19 year they won't have to "drop down to the DA development team" at U17. So the only issue may come at U18. That is doubtful given the birth year issue. Bench players always have that decision to make whether on DA or ECNL team. There are some ECNL teams locally that aren't as strong so if you are a bench player at CF you have to decide...do you stay or do you try out at a lower level team? I don't think this plan of Tophat's is great, but we won't know until they execute it. I would have tried NPL which would have been a good option with less travel than what they are doing. There are NPL girls (even locally) that go D1 if that is a player's goal. They can play high school if that is what they want. I think you misunderstand how many younger kids would rather play DA than high school especially if you are coming up through that club environment where DA is touted as the best. Tophat will be fine. I think it is great that we have both DA and ECNL so kids can go play high school if they want and if they don't want to they can play DA instead. I agree they have neutralized each other. Especially if Solar, FC Dallas, NCFC and So Cal Blues are confirmed for DA as Tophat has.

In my opinion ...
The LEAGUES are simply WHERE TEAMS PLAY and WHO THEY PLAY AGAINST
The CLUBS are simply WHERE THE TEAMS TRAIN and WHO THE COACHES ARE (oh and what color kits you buy every two years)
It is a chicken or egg situation!
Which do you choose first?
The LEAGUE? or The CLUB?
And does it really matter?
Either you are in it for the LEAGUE status (this league IS better than THAT league in everyone's own personal opinion)
OR you are in it for the CLUB status (this CLUB is better - higher ranked - better reputation - better coaches whatever everyone's own personal opinion is about the CLUB)
THE LEAGUE
If you want to choose your league first then remember the leagues are simply WHERE TEAMS PLAY and WHO THEY PLAY AGAINST
How much travel are you willing to commit to when you commit to travel soccer?
Metro Atlanta, Southeast, East Coast, Half the Country, Coast to Coast?
Try out for a team at or slightly above Messi/Mia's skill set based on your family preference for travel and competition level based on the LEAGUE you like.
STOP THE FOMO. (Fear of Missing Out)
Yup there are at least nine different league options listed.
At the end of the day does it REALLY matter which LEAGUE Mia & Messi play in?
LEAGUES at least 9 (so far) DA (USSF) DPL (USYS) ECNL (US Club) High School (GHSA) National League/ Athena/ Classic (USYS) NPL (US Club) SCCL Champions/ Premier (US Club) Super Y USL Academies
OR DO YOU CHOOSE
THE CLUB
If you want to choose your club first then remember it doesn't matter what league you play in you are in it for the CLUB.
What are you looking for in a CLUB? Where is the club located? Parent and Player overall satisfaction at the club? Coach longevity at the club? Club Cultural?
Try out for a team at or slightly above Messi/Mia's skill set based on your family preference for the CLUB that fits your needs remembering CLUBS are WHERE THE TEAMS TRAIN and WHO THE COACHES ARE and the you just have to accept the league the club chooses (or is invited) to play in.
STOP THE FOMO. (Fear of Missing Out)
Yup there are at least 30 some CLUBS in the Metro Area
At the end of the day does it REALLY matter which CLUB Mia & Messi play at?
CLUBS at least 30+ AFC Lightning Alpharetta Ambush Soccer Club Atlanta Fire United Brookhaven FC Cherokee Soccer Association Chiefs FC Concorde Fire Soccer Club Decatur-Dekalb YMCA Soccer Club (DDYSC) Fugees Soccer Club Georgia Express FC Georgia FC Georgia RUSH Gwinnett Soccer Academy Inter Atlanta FC Lanier Soccer Association North Atlantic Soccer Association Peachtree City Youth Soccer Association Peachtree Ridge Youth Athletic Association PRO Profile Georgia Storm Rapids Futbol Club Rockdale Youth Soccer Association Savannah United SF Alliance Futbol Club Smyrna Soccer Club Soccer in the Streets Southern Soccer Academy Steamers FC Tophat Soccer Club United Futbol Academy YMCA Arsenal Rome
CHICKEN or EGG?
Some years I pick the chicken first, some years I pick the egg first, and some years (I'm looking at YOU age mandate) you just end up with CHICKEN EGG SCRAMBLE HASH.
(LOL - I "crack" myself up)
