I'm not Garvin, but my daughter does play for him so I only wrote about what I have seen from him firsthand. Again I'll put him up against ANY coach on the girls side.

I’ll second the vote for Garvin, both as a trainer and a coach. Best coach any of my kids ever played for. They’ve played for a handful of the names in this thread and none of them hold a candle to Garvin.

From what I have seen of Garvin, older kids love him and younger kids hate him.

Are you confusing him with Fred Garvin?

Surprised no one has mentioned Jon Akin. Know him from previous days at Santos, to be honest, but I’m sure he’s carried his coaching over to the new club at BFC - now UFA Metro Atlanta Jon still coaches youth teams? I haven’t seen him on a sideline in years figured he was just running Brookhaven and Oglethorpe.

Anyone have a different view of Josh Hurst. It looks like he will be coaching my daughter's team this fall and I am not encouraged by most of the comments I read. Anyone with a different view?

I have only seen him up close in limited situations, but understand the reactions people have on both sides. My first reaction when I met him was he seemed very positive and pleasant, seemed to have good relations with several of the girls and seemed to enjoy talking with them and very inviting personality as they were warming up. As they moved to actual playing, he definitely seemed to have a very high bar and very low tolerance for mistakes. He definitely called girls out pretty harshly in front of everyone and would pull them out if they didn’t do things right. I like the high expectations and the non-game interactions, but was not impressed in the public call outs and benching on any mistake. So I would say mixed bag that could be very good for a kid and parents with thick skin and willing to be pushed and called out. Again, limited interactions, but seems like I heard several on here with similar experience.

Super high energy, always pushing, cares a lot and is fun to hang out with in the evenings at the hotels. Definitely expects a lot and will call out the girls who don't go full speed. His '05 Premier team was fun to watch and won an awful lot. Agree that he may not be for everyone.

I have to respectfully disagree. Josh Hurst is the rudest and most verbally abusive coach I have ever encountered and there are many other parents that would agree with me. It is one thing to yell and be hard on kids in a constructive way to push them to grow. It is another thing totally to attack kids on a very personal level and try and tear them down and humiliate them in front of their teammates and other parents.. I saw so many girls whose self-esteems were destroyed under his coaching and I know at least one girl who ended up in therapy over his abusive behavior. And these are not high school aged kids. I am talking 10, 11, 12 years old. He got reprimanded many times by SSA but they never did more than make him apologize to parents and kids because he was winning the club games. Shame on SSA for allowing that behavior to go on for so long. Maybe they finally had enough of it and fired him. Josh may win games but it is at a pretty high cost. He leaves all kinds of carnage in his wake. Parents stay away if you care anything about your kids self esteem. He is a nightmare and takes any and all fun out of the game for the kids. Although the soccer obsessed parents whose only focus is to win at all costs love him. But they are also the same parents bad mouthing other kids on the team behind their back during games. If that is your type of scene. Josh is your man. ouch...I always thought he was a D-Bag...heard him yell at opposing parents one too many times...and that fake English accent...OMG

For those who have had experience with Josh Hurst, would you mind emailing me? He recently yelled at me and my 5 year old and had me remove him from the field. Broke my young child’s heart. First experience with organized sports. We are with the Birmingham united soccer association. It feels unfair to our children to allow this to continue and I want to do my part to let those in authority know.
