This Home Grown topic is an interesting one. Of the group (Carleton, Goslin, Kunga, Bello, Okonkwo, Campbell) - Bello and Campbell actively remain while Carleton/Kunga were loaned. Okonkwo and Goslin were dropped. The odds don’t seem favorable for local talent in the MLS but TOCA and local clubs seem to benefit from adding some as coaches. What gives? What’s the best way to develop local talent to go pro? I see local talent getting signed to colleges (in some cases the same colleges) as ATLUTD players and in some cases getting more minutes on the field. Obviously the exposure/experience/training at ATLUTD and other youth academies is great, but it would be wonderful to hear about true pro success stories with homegrowns.

How is he a “homegrown” player for Atlanta even though he’s spent the last five plus years in the Columbus Crew’s Academy.

HG rules are that the player must train, play, and live in area for a full year in order to qualify HG status.

Over 20+ College players are HG eligible for AU. As time goes on AU will have 60+ College players eligible at any given year plus international buys plus young stars they feel are ready at 17/18 (Wolff, AC, etc)

This is only the very beginning of a monster.
10 years from now, the machine will be producing crazy numbers.

We are certainly not short on talent. It will be great To see young players from the USA being recognized like Pulisic/Adams/Davies

And yes, nothing wrong with taking ownership of Davies even though he is Canadian. 🤣

HG rules are that the player must train, play, and live in area for a full year in order to qualify HG status. So it’s really not Homegrown, it’s just setting up residence like a normal person. 🤦🏻♂️ MLS is such a sham and fraud.

Yea - they need to change the name. Their is nothing homegrown about the kid.
Quality player for sure though - kid can flat out score goals in every fashion.

I’d love to see this guy (and a long line of players like him) in the first team and then get sold to Europe. I hope MLS doesn’t screw it up for him.
In better soccer nations “clubs” that have a quality development pipeline either thrive (Competitively) by winning or (financially) by selling. Clubs have the option to spend or save, and rise and fall based on merit.
From top to bottom it is about sport AND business acumen. And it’s about opportunity. Playing your way you to (or staying in) the top division or the second or third division is enormous by itself. Trophies are icing on the cake.
Our system is so screwed up..
MLS is so blindly convinced that Parity is more important than competition- all because NFL rolls in money thanks to TV commercials.. that they fail to see that soccer must rely on the game instead of the commercials. And parity > quality = average at best for the fans.

And parity > quality = average at best for the fans. To be fair, though.. look at some of the european leagues. France? PSG, and everyone else.. it's not interesting to anyone outside of france because it's a one-horse race every year. La Liga? I love it, but lets be honest.. it's two teams, occasionally Athletico .. and everyone else.
Like college football locals will watch their teams because they're die-hard.. even if they suck (sorry Tennessee fans). MLS doesn't yet have that luxury.

How is he a “homegrown” player for Atlanta even though he’s spent the last five plus years in the Columbus Crew’s Academy. His family (Josh and Ricky) has been in ATL since at least the 80's. My siblings and I played with them out at what was Mike Balson's Soccer Academy on Arcado Road back in the day. Go Steamers!

But where did Tyler play club? I haven’t seen or heard any Atlanta youth clubs bragging about his AUFC signing.

Yeah but where are the most important years, those academy U10-U12 years.

That I can't answer, other than his father was with DC united prior to coaching at Columbus, so it appears he also played youth soccer in the northern Virginia area as well.

Yeah but where are the most important years, those academy U10-U12 years. Based on math he was at Crew for U12 he was just playing U13/U14. The further along I get in youth soccer the more I realize U12 and under the most important thing is technical training and if you have a parent that played high level (coached high level) then it doesn't matter where you played, you have a huge leg up on other kids. If you figure this pearl out with your first kid then your second kid has a leg up on others as well.

Will be interesting to see how Wolf's season finishes. he didn't make the 18 against Toronto, and was on the bench the 2 games prior, after playing 25,8 and 1 minute in the previous 3 games.
The next 3 or 4 games (don't remember what is left) are must win and or get points games for Atlanta United. you have to throw out your best roster to try to make the playoffs.
The first Academy class are not Seniors in high school and will be interesting what happens to them after they graduate and where do they land -- Atlanta United I believe has to relinquish their rights for mls.
