Yesterday, I witnessed the boys Roswell Santos 2005 Blue tie UFA 2005 ECNL 1-1. Last season, Roswell was a team who placed 2nd in the NL Piedmont division, and they currently just joined the SCCL. UFA ECNL was in DA last year and placed 4th in the Southeastern Division. Both sides looked pretty even and it could have gone either way. Is this just a rare occurrence, or is Roswell really up there with the big dogs? The real question is ,"Do leagues really matter?". Please reply below your opinion or if you have seen similar occurrences.

For a mid size club Santos does have some quality teams and is a great addition to the SCCL. Talking about the 05 Santos team specifically, they have one of the best if not the best Stikers in the state and play a very direct style of soccer. Put him on any mid/upper level team regardless of the league and they would most likely win most of their games.
Leagues only matter at upper age levels if wanting to be scouted by D1 schools

I think it's probably the case of a few outliers here and there.
The Concorde 07 North Boys Elite team plays SCCL-1 and already beat Concorde Premier ENCL, Atlanta Fire ENCL, GSA ENCL, UFA Norcross (won SCCL Last Fall) and AFC NPL. UFA Norcross 07 Boys last year beat some ENCL teams in tournaments. The 07 Piedmont Boys National League teams is now compromised entirely of teams with players of International Backgrounds like KSA and Dalton/Rome teams that can play with anyone.

Yes, leagues matter. But that is an interesting result - we play the UFA 05s on Sunday.

Yes, leagues matter. But that is an interesting result - we play the UFA 05s on Sunday. I believe this is somewhat true. A bigger league usually attracts better players causing college coaches to value the league more. However there will always be exceptions for some individual teams. Thank you for sharing your opinion. Good luck with the game on Sunday!

Thank you for sharing your opinion. Good luck with the game on Sunday! Roswell is strong program, no doubt. There are a few players on our team that played there when they were younger. I look at the league hierarchy as overlapping, not one on top of the other - but if you play on a team in the lower half of the tougher league you should have better competition week to week.

I'm pretty sure that UFA team lost several players this year but there are typically at least a couple of teams not in these top leagues who can hang

Leagues matter for exposure to the most college coaches. Do they 100% state the quality of an individual team or player? No. A couple of years ago the UFA 03 G SCCL team (now All in FC 03) beat a few ECNL teams at Jeff Cup. AFC Lightning 05 G NPL beat AFU ECNL in the Concorde tourney a few weeks ago. You know that old saying "on any given Sunday"? It applies to youth soccer as well. Generally the cream rises but there are some good teams out there that are NOT in a top league.
To parents, players and college coaches the leagues do matter. Mainly though it is just one part. The league matters for the clout. It matters for the degree of competition (more better teams in better leagues, more parity).

Multiple leagues is bad for sure I think ECNL will continue to its rise on the boys side and maintain it's dominance on the girls side.
What they need to figure out is a way to bring in clubs that can't compete in 5 age groups, but have one or 2 solid age groups every year. Somehow allow "teams" vs "clubs" -- i'm not smart enough to figure this out

I suppose they do-but if you live below I-20, there aren’t as many options. As many other posters have said, it’s a shame that we have so many leagues and so much exclusivity in youth soccer. I believe #Rifle called it a caste system-pretty accurate.

I was going to take my daughter to Toca on her off weekend but I'm dropping her off at Terrill Mill or somewhere so she can play some pick up games. We have to stop feeding the beast all the time and give our kids humbler ways to be successful.

Has their been any Girls Academy vs ECNL games yet early in this new season? Just the CESA friendlies as far as I know locally. As for the rest of the country I do not know specifics but it was mentioned in another thread. As for the CESA friendlies I think the only game Tophat Gold lost was one game for the 04 team. That team lost several players to other clubs and then lost 2 more to injury. The 08, 07 and 03/02 teams were ridiculously dominant in their games. They are just friendlies though and coaches experiment with where they put people and playing time.

Keepers stand on their heads, lucky goal here, key PK there and that's a difference on a given day.

On any given Sunday (or Saturday)

Has their been any Girls Academy vs ECNL games yet early in this new season? There have been at least a few. CESA ECNL friendlies event like people have mentioned and then Weston and FKK played their GA and ECNL teams against one another. Also I have seen at least one more in OK Energy (GA) against D'Feeters (ECNL) on the GA social media page.

Any team can win on a given day... especially pre-season. At the younger ages (maybe through u16), the upper level alphabet leagues have a lot of movement. Players hop from one team to another and one club to another. So teams that maintain consistency and have played together for years can play with anyone. But as those new teams start to gel, the players on those upper level alphabet league teams typically have more skill than the non-alphabets - and it shows in game results. But again, any team can win on a given day. That's part of the beauty of sport - the "best" team doesn't always win.

Leagues are the demise of men's soccer in this country-- not has bad for women, now that ecnl is king! I do think ECNL boys quickly stepped in to fill a void and now besides the DA sides losing that carrot of DA, we probably are in a better place with most of the mega clubs competing u13 - u19 in ecnl. The problem still is -- the smaller clubs, they are getting the raw deal in these leagues.
but yea -- depending upon your goals, league matters for sure.
If boys ecnl can continue to pick up clubs, retain MLS sides and figure out how like someone mentioned, bring in "teams" occasionally vs clubs, we will progress. The logistics of bringing in a team vs clubs would be a major challenge though. I think that is where US Club taking over the youth soccer scene can play its part with NPL and SCCL -- figure out how all 3 leagues can be intertwined if needed. Logistically --- very difficult.
The hard part we have is we aren't like North Carolina with a ton of major D1 mens and womens schools, our biggest and premier academic institutions don't even have men's teams, and only 1 has women's team.

Oh no. I do not think it means that at all. I think the point was just reinforcing the any given Sunday point. AFC Lightning NPL was a much better team last year than UFA 05 Red (SCCL-P). Sometimes a team just has a great day when another does not or luck or calls go your way or don't.

Years ago I don't think the lack of D1 school teams mattered, but now I think it does. The cost of the education has gone up. Many well-to-do families won't send their kids to strong academic institutions out of state if they can send them in state (I am speaking of all states, not just Georgia). The scholarship money for soccer is not good enough. The amount of money that a kid can make going pro is also mediocre at best. This is another reason why soccer is a wealthy kid's sport. The investment is a lot of time and money and the monetary reward is very low.

It does not mean that each team, up and down the league is automatically better than a team in a "lower" league, it does not mean the coaching is automatically better, but it does matter when college coaches decide where to go spend their time looking for players.
