But hey, even if your son’s team plays in SCCL-4, the grandparents can brag to their friends that Atlanta United has rights to him!

Yeah pretty dated. Like I said, i know of a few that have gone on to other MLS clubs. I even seen several at the AU campus. I think on paper it has an outline but realistically if a player wants to play at any MLS club they have a right to do so.

But hey, even if your son’s team plays in SCCL-4, the grandparents can brag to their friends that Atlanta United has rights to him! i get the feeling of a little animosity towards AU. Almost as bad as some do toward NASA or Concorde. lol Its not like AU wrote the rules for MLS. Uncle Arthur has and continues to do amazing things for soccer in this state. I think its a great honor to wear the badge and represent the stripes.

As far as the players, just the opposite - I would like AU playing more against local teams, even if they play up. As far as the academy as an organization, I think they can do better, as most clubs can, but AU academy is the pinnacle so maybe I’m holding them to a higher standard. My opinion is during the first 2 years of existence it was driven more purely by the players and their talent, and now it seems overly administered and less compelling. Naturally it could also be that the excitement of those first years has worn off and business side of it has taken over.

AU does scrimmage local teams quite frequently, perhaps you just don’t know about it. I know the younger ages just scrimmaged Dalton this past week. I heard older teams also scrimmaged other clubs. They are playing up in ECNL. I’m not sure why a club that’s so young is considered the pinnacle. Look at Chicago, the Sockers are still considered the top club not Chicago Fire. If you are just looking at match results, then you are missing the true objective of development. I don’t know if your opinion is based on theory and conjecture or is it based on your own personal experience with your son being at the club?

I think on paper it has an outline but realistically if a player wants to play at any MLS club they have a right to do so. I know of at least one non-AU DA player (back when such a thing existed) who inquired about trying out for another MLS club academy. The response was, "You live in GA which is Atlanta United's territory. We can't have anything to do with you unless your family moves into our territory for non-soccer reasons." So maybe MLS club to MLS club is allowed or whatever, but the one story I know of with a player trying to get a look from another MLS club was blocked due to the territory stuff.

This rule is pointless and needs to end.

The rule at its core is meant to do good. It accomplishes a couple of goals. First it allows for folks to explore the pro soccer pathway, locally. Secondly, it stops folks from "migrating" to a soccer hotbed and decimating large swaths of the country where an MLS club exists. Now, should your local MLS club not have an interest in you, then you have the right to move into another territory. Even after you make it to a local club like AU, you can ask for a release, especially if it's not a right fit. So you don't have to wait for them to cut you. There are a myriad of ways to circumvent this rule. I personally think it is an antiquated rule also but them is the rules as it is today...

I know a handful who have circumvented the rule, not sure how the clearance process works etc.

Gotcha, I can understand that. every club can do better but understand your point. I think many factors are in play. First two years yes for sure was more excitement. Now its business I think. They had several changes with personnel and even a complete change when Tata left. Frank came in and some minor changes happened. So I think they will always have some sort of changes up top that slowly changes how the bottom operates. For the most part I think they are trying to develop. They are more patient for some than others and I do see that they favor some individuals than others. I think that has a lot to do with the coach. Lots of "friendlies" happen. Most off the books but a couple of years ago the U16's played several D2/3 college teams. National team for the def etc..

I think part of the issue now is for many players getting to AU is not obtainable. Once you don't make the cut in year 1, it's extremely difficult to get over there.
UFAs and Concords 17s 2 years ago and 19s last year were the perfect example -- many many many quality kids that are as good as what they have/had etc. I know a handful moved from concorde last year and few from UFA turned them down as well.
to me this is the biggest difference -- at AU you get the greatest exposure in the country. a non-MLS club only gets it when they compete and WIN -- hence why so many UFA and Concorde boys went to quality schools. Playing on a winning team is almost a must on the boys side if you want exposure. It's not national team exposure level though or professional team level exposure - it's exposure for top d1 schools.
and obviously AU has more resources than anyone in the country --- but the reality is still, many other clubs in this city have some of the best coaches in certain age groups.

Agree, plus at the other clubs those coaches have long lasting relationships with D1 coaches. i.e. D1 coach calls local coach A and asks, who do you got for me? I need this... This is why you dont burn a bridge. They all know each other. Like it or not some coaches have a lot of power (credit)

Did AU make some more guest parking? Haven’t been over there in the last year but last time I had to park down the road which was sketchy.

I heard they did do some construction during the Covid break, but I don't know if parking was part of that. Friend with kid in the Academy says they are really stringent on who is allowed into the facility now (Covid Protocols) so even if they have parking, I think if you are not on the club style VIP list, it might all be moot if you want to go watch...

I have a feeling Atlanta united is gonna beat the living shizat out of most of the teams they play. Interesting to see how the local MLS Next teams compared to ECNL compete against AU. My money is on the ECNL teams being much more competitive as of right now. Down the road, who knows.
