AU U17s ( a mix of 06,05,04) played the #2 U18/19 GSA ECNL today. AU won 7-1 AU U16s (a mix of 06, 05) played their GSA U16s counterpart - AU won. I hear folks stopped counting after 14 or 15 goals. Oh btw AU kept a clean sheet...🙉🙊🙈 . Yup it was pretty surgical! Stayed for the first half of that match it got ugly quickly.

Not surprised the GSA 16s are nothing special. they lost to NASA twice, UFA twice and Concorde Platinum twice -- and I bet all three of those teams would throttle them now also. Congrats for beating a glorified rec team that can't even connect a pass.
the 19s is a more interesting result.

I’m guessing this was the U16 GSA team from last year that eventually grabbed the final playoff spot when AU stepped away from ECNL? Next year’s squad should be a force considering the talent they brought in. I think they can take a few of those players that joined the team for next year to the playoffs but I’m wondering if any of them played in this game you’re talking about? Anyone know?

The GSA u19s is not the same group who went to the National Finals as U16s. Only 3 or 4 players remain. Remember u18/19 includes college first year students. BTW as u16s I believe they beat AU in several scrimmages.

Wait a "glorified rec team" was able to get players to want to come join them? Maybe it's because they couldn't connect a pass. BTW kids never played at GSA, just going off of what socceristhebest stated earlier...😉

For the most part was the old squad. I don’t know them that well but I believe 1/2 the team is going to change. Their coach was not there as well. I only watched part of the first half but it was pretty ugly. Team defensive shape was very ugly. Absolutely no team defensive compression and team defending. AU hit them with a lot quick transitional goals with numbers. Not the type of game you want to just throw a team together and just go out there.

League is in a very bad spot -- Especially here in Atlanta, so many top clubs not in MLS next - makes it OUT of SITE, OUT of MIND that's not a good thing. I think this also impacts the actual MLS.
The kids used to love playing AU twice a year, now they never play. Maybe an extra scrimmage, but ours have all been canceled when attempted. I trully think this has a negative impact on the entire MLS as they try to be the one and only professional league in the country. The TV numbers are terrible, the kids just don't watch the product, and having no "grassroots" connections doesn't help.
Lastly -- the biggest issue MLS teams do not care about this league -- they are destroying teams in most ages. They supplment the league with games against MLS clubs, that's all they care about -- those game, and the MLS tournaments.
This league is all show, a 1/2 ass attempt to replace DA -- well they failed. When the UFAs, Concordes, NASAs dont' watch to join you clearly have a major problem.

I agree-one if the reasons to have an academy is to build grass roots support for the first team. I suppose AU can’t play every one but it would seem they would want to play as much local top talent as they could.

MLS NEXT just does not appear to be well thought out beyond MLS Academies. In Atlanta, if you are with AU and playing well you should be fine. If you are a local club in MLSNEXT how many quality games are you playing locally? Getting thrashed by AU is not a quality game. Is AU extending offers to players from local MLSNEXT clubs? I tend to believe that any college scouts or others are only looking at MLS Academy players and not local MLSNEXT players but I could be wrong. Add in additional expenses for travel to play quality teams and MLSNEXT just doesn’t seem that attractive at least in the SE. Most of the big local clubs in Atlanta will be going to ECNL playoffs on the West Coast and they will be playing the best ECNL teams in the country, not 2nd or 3rd tier teams. Playtime, development, opportunity and I’ll assume there might even be some MLSNEXT scouts on the ECNL sideline hunting for talent!

If you really are thinking scouts are only looking at MLS academy players you are a fool. They are looking for good players regardless of which league they play in. It’s stupid for someone to compare ECNL vs MLS Next. It appears the ones usually doing it play in ECNL. Nobody cares you get to pay to go to the west coast for your playoffs where almost everyone gets in. If MLS NEXT is so flawed, why would you even want, care or think about whether their scouts will be there? You can laugh at someone getting thrashed by Atlanta United but have you ever thought that perhaps someone will get seen even in a defeat? Not to mention many other instances of teams beating MLS academies, boys get seen and potentially picked up( for free). Not every kid wants a model where you take months off for high school soccer over club soccer, then come back to go play on the playoffs on the west coast but now your team has no chemistry from the time off.

The Champions League must be what you are referring to as the best ECNL teams in the nation out on the west coast. It appears all you have to do to be one of the best teams in the nation is finish in SIXTH place and your family can win an all expense trip for airfare, hotel, food, entertainment and car expenses. And don’t worry, we even have a wildcard if you didn’t finish high enough because we want only the best.

Hopefully you are right and my judgement is flawed. It would be awesome to see non-MLS academy players on the national team and on USL or Division 1 college rosters. There is talent all over Georgia with a bunch of potential.
