I think the fact that it appears from posters that teams were mixed used as "tryouts", etc. says it all. It was not clear if the top teams from the big clubs played. What are you talking about, man! I watched multiple age groups and multiple games - whether or not clubs mixed in players, they did so to win/field their best possible team. Nobody had their lower teams play. The top teams played. Period. I don’t get your angle. Are you ticked that clubs like Santos, Rush, Ambush, All-In, and Chico’s Bail Bonds didn’t play? Hey now-stop picking on Chico’s Bail Bonds. They beat out Freddie’s Food truck to make it to the “Pecos” league final.

Having been around the game w kid playing highest levelsfor 15 plus years, I would argue mixing teams does not produce best team. Chemistry and teamwork takes a long time to develop. Further did you compare playing rosters with teams there to the clubs top team rosters? Thx for the dialogue...enjoy your day.

Yes, the number of qualifying teams is different for each age group. The U16s go 5 deep. From what I hear the GSA 05s will have an injection of talent for next year while their 07s will be raided by AU. It will be interesting to see how many players GSA 07s lose. That team went under the radar at the start of the season. I know one of the GSA 07s is supposedly gone, rumors of a possible second but not confirmed. Haven't heard of any more though.

Long time observer, first time poster... The lure and appeal of AU is no longer much of a positive thing. It seems from the outside AU could to do whatever they wanted from fielding teams and etc. Messed things up for all ECNL clubs and teams. From the inside it looks as if them wanting to find "that player" is backfiring to some sense. Is there real development from within or just shuffling players in and out. I this is confirmation that AU truly didn't care about the ECNL schedule and the impact on the Post Season. They are heading to Big Sky Texas www.soccerwire.com/news/inaugural-mls-next-cup-playoffs-to-take-place-this-summer-in-dallas-area/

They are heading to Big Sky Texas www.soccerwire.com/news/inaugural-mls-next-cup-playoffs-to-take-place-this-summer-in-dallas-area/Hello and welcome. Glad you finally joined the discussion and you've asked a very good question. I had said in a previous post that the development of your son should not be left to anyone else but you and your kid. Knowing what I know today, I would not send a kid to AU till their rising U15 year aka summer before high school. The US environment is not setup for true development. For true development you have to get lots and lots of touches on the ball in different scenarios. Successful academies around the world have the players life surround soccer, while here we have soccer surround life/school/etc. For a real academy to produce successful players, we have to have a residential component where all the distractions of life are removed and you're allowed to have sessions 2-3 times a day with periodization in-between to limit injuries. I think AU still presents an opportunity that other clubs don't offer. First off you have the cost. Having someone else pay for school, kits, boots, travel and fees has an effect of leveling the playing field between the haves and the have-nots. Secondly, you have the cache to those who may or may not know better who automatically think hey he played for AU an MLS Pro Academy, he can play soccer. I venture to say if it came down to two players, one being from AU, the marketing machine would push the AU player across the finish line first. They may shuffle players, but the key reasoning is to challenge individual players or teams of players. You have the fully funded medical facilities and access to world class trainers and facilities to help diagnose, treat and rehab an injured player(Medical Concierge Service). You have the constant exposure to colleges, pro-scouts, nat'l team scouts and we all know that 90% of all Nat'l Team rosters are filled with MLS Academy Players. Finally, when you're at a pro-academy club, every minute of every day of every year is a tryout session. You're constantly being pushed and kept on your toes. When you go through that kind of gauntlet, it's sure to either break you or more likely make you one mentally tough monster...

Get you calculators out. I wonder if the pressure from all the clubs in the tables they screwed up by playing different age groups against different teams finally won out. Also hearing no ECNL for AU next year. |nope, au do not care about your feelings| |me thinks ur son lose to au| |win ur games no calculator needed| |if au call next year ecnl open arms again|

So let me gets this straight, teams that beat Atl get to lose points they already won, while teams that lost to Atl have no consequences since they had no points anyway. This will skew results in a strange way. Why not just have the forfeit rules apply and Atl loses all remaining games 3-0 so all current results still apply. Joking? No, NASA 07s or whomever, you don’t get to keep your win over AU 08s while others just eliminate the loss to AU 07s. But look on the bright side NASA 05s would move from 3rd to 1st. It’s the same thing up and down the age groups. AU skewed the standings across them all. With the exception of their 05s, AU can not win playing up against mid to top table ECNL teams. They won’t be able to finish their league game schedules at this point and you can’t just have them say bye-bye and pick and choose which games to count. If their out, they should be all out.

What age groups are you referring to as being messed up by AU playing different teams? U18/19 AU 2nd place playoff U16 AU 4th place playoff U15 AU 1st place playoff U14 AU 7th place So I assume you are referring to u14 age group but how many times did the true u14 team play? Maybe 3 times? All the other matches were played by the 13’s. I remember when AU first began ECNL play, no results were posted and people lost their minds. A lot of people thought they were just exhibition type matches meant to give a club more matches. Then they started counting the matches and people were complaining about which team they played as it wasn’t fair some teams played a different AU squad. The only teams the 14’s beat were CF Plat (we all remember the infamous cheating with bio-banded players) Tennessee (True 07’s)and Chattanooga while drawing with FC Alliance and CF Prem. The top three teams all played the 13’s and won, so what’s the issue (if the rumor is even true)? And comments have been made about the Unite Cup. That’s great NASA made the finals in all age groups but let’s not forget that for whatever reason GSA was not involved, which I’m sure would have changed at least one final (u14 at the minimum). I don’t think them making the finals is more impressive than AU winning it but AU is always in a lose/lose position and always will. A couple comments about NASA 14’s playing AU close is a farce. Anyone knows that soccer is the only sport you can have 80 to 90 percent of possession, absolutely dominate a match, make a few subs and then the other team scores. I have yet to see that team connect five passes, however, they are very good on set pieces. Whoa, whoa, whoa...NASA 07’s played them a lot closer than you are letting on...they actually played substantially better in their 3-1 unite cup final loss (playing a man down) than they did in their 2-2 group play tie. Probably a 60/40 possession split, with NASA missing multiple opportunities and AU’s goalie making some good saves. I’m no fan of the NASA 07’s style of play (which the coach changed dramatically since the dissolution of the DA...used to be possession oriented), but to say it he games were close is a farce, is patently false. The last three games between the two teams has been, tie, tie, NASA loss (playing a man down).

Here are the 2 selling points for AU 1) free 2) college exposure is CONSISTENTLY better than the other clubs. yes a few teams like UFA and concorde will pop up and make a run and those kids will get big time looks, but still consistently the exposure will be better at Atlanta United. There are negatives just as there are negatives everywhere else. I'm with Futsal Gawdess MLS clubs should leave the <15 age group to the local club. at 15 kids size starts to settle some and kids start catching those kids that were giants at u12 -u14. I know so many kids at u13-u14 were considered unstoppable physical giant machines, 15 to 25 goals in the DA, then u15 and above, those kids were fighting for spots on top teams, fighting for minutes barely scoring a handful of goals. The big kids always get caught, very rarely do they not, unless they continue to grow as well, usually they dont'

He did get a call but declined their offer. So you know I have a boatload of questions right... I am honestly curious as to your reasoning (not judging) for turning them down? What did the AU scout/coach say in return when you turned them down? What reason did you give them and what was their response? What age was your kid when the offer came and was it mid season or post season(tryouts)? How did they identify your kid via a regular invite for a trial, a tryout or just simply part of their "scouting network?" Finally, if you took him to a tryout or agreed to go to a tryout what was your goal if you were going to decline an offer or did you see, feel or experience something that made you change your mind? Sorry for the 20 questions, but I think myself and others on here can learn from your experience...

The big kids always get caught, very rarely do they not, unless they continue to grow as well, usually they dont' On the flip side, the biggest negative to sending a kid to AU’s academy at an early age is that the best coaches in the Atlanta market don’t coach at AU. So you get the organizational benefits, but you sacrifice on the coaching side. I don’t know if that is a trade-off that ever benefits the player in the long term. Not that the AU academy coaches are bad. They’re not. I would call most above average. But a player can get a higher quality of coaching at several of the Atlanta clubs. If my kid played for Ryan Austin or Velko Iotov or Robin Dixon or Ray Tomlin or Karl Haggon or any of several more top-tier coaches, I would leave them there until very late in their club career before even considering a move to AU. AU has a top class organization around their academy. They do not, at this point, have the top class coaching staff in the city.

Just playing a bit of devils advocate after reviewing MLS salaries. Let’s go out on a limb and assume in the near future Homegrowns will get first team minutes on a regular basis. They certainly won’t be doing so at Juergen Damm type starting salary. If the Pathway thru an MLS Academy fizzles out in the MLS, how attractive is it?
I get it. Prestige, free tuition/boots/gear, top level coaching and branding and some of the best competition period available. But end goal is MLS and a mediocre salary? Is an MLS Youth club a path to Europe and elsewhere? I glanced at a few MLS players in games last week and paid attention to other players from Argentina and elsewhere who are considered great players stopping by the MLS on their way to Europe. We have some darn good American players who COULD have a shot elsewhere but are simply stuck in the MLS. I wonder if in the midst of decision making about accepting an offer from ATLUTD if this is a consideration. Locking yourself into a contract with ATL and MLS. Also, I’ve heard that a few boys who were offered spots through the years chose to instead enjoy their teen years playing both club and high school minus the super high pressure of an MLS club. To each their own!

True story. Offered in January. Gave 3 days notice. Wanted my son to quit HS and be enrolled in virtual in a matter of 3 days. Left it to my son. He declined. They suck because they have known him since U12. He was brought in multiple times throughout the years. Then they decide to take him, but only on 3 days notice. Left the decision to my son and his final answer was no. Does that give you enough info to figure out who I am?

Once they get word kids are being offered by big time schools or there is interest from another country, the phone will ring....

That is the exact scenario here. He has tortured them every year we play them and then poof we want you now immediately. Turning his life upside was the reason that we let him decide. We told them to reach out in the summer and now they are mad and said they didn't want him now. It is ok, because my son said he wouldn't have accepted their offer again. I think he likes his club and his HS.
