I’ve heard that as many as 20 local Atlanta teams from the U13 to U18/19 age groups are heading to Seattle with their sights set on winning the ECNL Girls National Championship in their respective age brackets. Best of luck to all the players, coaches, and families as you represent our robust ATL Soccer Community... To stay updated with scores, standings, and other important information, please visit: ECNL Girls National Championship. 6 Team(s) - CF Platinum 5 Team(s) - GSA 4 Team(s) - UFA 4 Team(s) - AFU 1 Team(s) - CF Premier

GA is in LA (Silverlakes) ECNL is in Seattle (60 Acers) It's a 20-25 hour drive between the two. I think most of us are aware they are in two different western states. The gal tournament started a few days earlier, making it feasible for a recruiting coach to attend both events. It wouldn't be out of the realm to think a recruiting coach start with the gal tourney and then move on the ECNL. Additionally, most coaches will likely choose to fly rather than drive, as flying is a more efficient use of time compared to spending an entire day on the road...

Meh... a two hour flight (going from west coast to west coast) or a 5-6 hour flight (going from west coast to east coast) aren't that big of a difference. What does make a difference is staying in the same time zone.

Unfortunately, the ECNL Southeastern teams are not performing as well as we would have hoped. I reached out to a few parents with kids (girls) participating in the ECNL Nationals in Seattle and received the following results and feedback: 47 games played so far and only 10 wins (he is an accountant by trade). 😭🥺😭
U18/19: 2005/2006 Plat: 3-1, 3-2, 1-1 (4-3 pks) In Championship game Thursday GSA: 1-2, 4-4 (3-5 pks)
U17: 2007 Plat: 2-4, 1-5, 0-2 UFA: 3-4, 1-4, 0-4 AFU: 2-1, 0-0, 0-3 GSA: 1-2, 0-3, 0-0
U16: 2008 Prem: 0-4, 1-2, 1-5 Plat: 0-2, 1-0, 0-2 GSA: 0-3, 1-3, 0-0 AFU: 0-7, 1-6, 0-2
U15: 2009: Play 3rd games tomorrow UFA: 2-3, 0-2 Plat: 2-0, 2-1 AFU: 1-3, 1-5
U14: 2010: Play 3rd games tomorrow GSA: 2-2, 2-1 Plat: 0-2, 1-2 AFU: 1-2, 1-3
U13: 2011: Play 3rd games tomorrow UFA: 6-0, 1-2 GSA: 1-1, 1-3 Plat: 0-3, 1-1

SE plays fall club soccer and high school in the spring. Unless they just get lucky the SE and other fall club teams will never do well. 15 of the 16 teams advancing in 07&08 play spring club. Kansas team in each age group are only exception. Not counting u18/19 because of too many variables like top kids are no longer playing or already graduated. It’s unfortunate but it’s a reality. Will be curious to see if same % holds true for the boys this week.

From the end of HS season to ECNL Nationals, every single team has about 2+ months to be prepared for the tournament in July. It is enough time to train an already formed team mentally, physically and tactically, including with quality scrimmages. But, instead of executing on this very important part of the season, clubs, coaches and players are too focused on the nuances that are being brought during tryouts. Too many changes, too much drama and little respect. National results are just a consequence of bad management overall, especially from coaches.

The practiced as soon as high school was over and did well. Kids kept themselves in great condition. Once on the field in the spring, you couldn't see any difference from their fall play. Great coach and great players with supportive parents.

Another factor is tryouts....some of these teams are changing going into the playoffs. I know of a team that only had 13 players going out to Nationals. Other teams have new players that are added to the roster for the Fall and inviting them to Nationals. Never understood tryouts in May/June.

Georgia clubs screw themselves over with May tryouts. Not uncommon to turn over 4-6 players at the older ages. If you don’t make the team next year, why would you spend thousands of dollar to play for your “old team.” Don’t get me wrong, I respect the integrity of those who finish their commitment but at the same time, I also understand when people back out. It also makes it more expensive for the players added on for Nationals because they did not have the opportunity to plan ahead of time.

I have a few follow-up questions and comments for the class. While I understand the logistics associated with ordering uniform kits in late July or early August, I personally think tryouts should be held just before team camps. It amazes me that we conduct tryouts while some students are still finalizing their exams. Additionally, this timing can disrupt families' plans, causing them to delay vacations or fully embrace holidays like Memorial Day. Regarding the issue of players leaving the team before the playoffs, I'd like to hear the class's thoughts. Should players be obligated to finish the season? What if a player is switching clubs and their new team is going to the playoffs? Should they be allowed to play for their new team? Does your view matter if the player if committed or uncommitted yet to college? Finally, should a coach have the authority to prevent a player from participating in the playoffs with their old team? I see both sides of the argument and I am curious to hear what the class thinks...

Not sure how a club could be obligated to finish the season or a coach could prevent a player from playing with an old team. Maybe the league (ECNL, GA, DPL, etc) could prevent new players from being added to the roster for a National type event even if they are on the roster for the upcoming season. I do know at the oldest age group it is always a challenge fielding a team for nationals. I know of a club that has paid for u18/u19 players to participate at Nationals even though it wasnt financial aid based. Question on tryouts....I may be wrong, but I thought tryout dates were dictated by Georgia Soccer.

I see both sides of the argument and I am curious to hear what the class thinks... All great questions, but I think it depends and I think it should go back to my earlier point: poor management. Examples: Coach 1: Early may - Team, I will be cutting 4 of you and I will reach out with the reasons individually. You can stay in the club; you can search outside options. However, you earned the spot to be on Nationals with the team, so we want you there. Result: 95% showed up. Long term thinking. Coach 2: Hold every player hostage until last day of tryouts. Cut 8 players and expect everyone to show up on Nationals. Result: Barely a player on the bench. Short term vision. Our tryout season became one of the worst events. Only a few coaches and teams are really focusing on continuity like Coach 1 which is yielding results. The majority, Coach 2, are in a constant process of "stealing" from other teams. This process not only is cutting throat, but lays in a very important foundation: the incapacity of Coaches to really build teams. They hide their mediocracy by recruiting what they perceive to be top players from other teams. It makes them look good, but the real issue is they are horrible coaches. In fact, I call them trainers & recruiters. Every coach that sees a need to replace on a team more than 4 - 5 players should be considered incompetent and be fired. Every club that does not focus on a team continuity and enables this behavior, should have leadership fired because they clearly cannot implement a good system for the club. Parents should wake up and demand more from false coaches and directors. You improve a team with a good system, hard work, talent, dedication and real leadership. Not during tryouts. Tryouts are made to improve key pieces on your team and not recruit 12-14 players from stories I heard recently. It is not hard to do the right thing and get good results, especially in the National level. It just needs good management (and in some instances character).

I see both sides of the argument and I am curious to hear what the class thinks... I agree 100% about tryouts. I also understand the logistics of ordering uniforms in late July, but there are ways to get it done. Clubs already have an idea of how many kids will be rostered, so they should be able to let Nike/Adidas, etc. know so the supply chain can be prepped. In regards to players playing in playoffs... - I don't see how you can obligate a player to travel and spend the money. This is especially true when the coach decides to cut the player. Yes they earned the spot, but it is seen as they are no longer part of that team, so why would the player want to be there...especially if cut as opposed to leaving on their own. - The leagues can certainly restrict the addition of "guest" players. I think ECNL already does this to an extent. However, if they are going to place an outright ban, there will be less teams attending due to lack of players...unless the team is kept together after tryouts. - The oldest age group is an enigma itself. I'm not even sure why that age group has National Playoffs in June. We had a recruiting call today with a college coach and he expressed his desire for players to end their club & high school seasons around March because too many of his players arrive injured for their Freshman year (he will be missing 3 players this fall due to torn ACLs either in high school or training for Nationals). - I do like the idea that if you were on a team that qualified for playoffs, you cannot go play for a different team in Playoffs. However, if your team didn't qualify, I'm fine with the player going to Playoffs with a different team.

To me it shows too many “high level” teams with not enough “high level” players. On a given ECNL team how many would make top trams at clubs that do make deep runs post season?

We definitely have too many “elite” teams. If you eliminate 2 area ecnl teams combined w what TH does you have 3 top teams. Better competition and better representation nationally.

Congratulations to CF Plat 05/06 making it to the championship game. That would have been a great way to leave the club for Garvin... Lots of amazing talent on that team that we will see play at the next level in the fall.
