The good news is since so many have the virus who we don't even know about means the fatality rate is even lower than official numbers. That's a positive.
Lets hope so! AND that those who have it that we dont know about stop dying. And that we actually count all those who have died due to the virus(see Italy, UK, France)
Always click on "yesterday" since there is a lag in the data.
I have been using this site as well. Some countries drop their data in all throughout the day, like the US, while others drop it in once per day like Italy.
I think the US is counting appropriate deaths. Our fatality rate may increase some because the virus gets worse on day 4 and 5 for a lot of people. Also some stay on a vent for 2 or 3 weeks. That leads to bacterial super infections as well so they will sometimes get MRSA pneumonia on top of their coronavirus pneumonia.
Overall there are some countries doing really well on the mortality rate, like Germany. The US is doing better than many places. We won't really ever know though unless every country tests ALL symptomatic people and we and Europe are not doing that. I say only the symptomatic people because the asymptomatic carriers are important for transmission but likely all countries have similar rates of asymptomatic people in the population.
Yeah.. I've seen courts full of boomers playing pickleball. Hard to blame them when they got a steady diet of 'this is a hoax' until the last week or two.
I'm sure someone will be held accountable for that part. /s
Not so fast. The person in question never told the people that the virus was a "hoax". He said the media coverage and the opposing party critiques of how it was being handled was a hoax, and for the most part I believe that to be true. The opposing party and media played it up a lot more than if a (D) was in office.

Though I agree that those are damning quotes from the president, maybe this thread can focus on what planning/communication we think should be done by clubs & leagues in the likely event that the spring season, spring tournaments and summer leagues are cancelled and tryouts pushed to late summer/early fall.
I think we should discuss how we want our evaluation report cards(or whatever your club calls them) for our children based on this (limited) year. By end of April. The coaches and admin should have plenty of time now to do these and do them well.
We should discuss how we want our clubs to handle refunds they get from hosts for tournaments. This probably can't go to individuals(?), so maybe the team gets a break on the fee for the following year's tournament? If the tournament(like Jeff cup won't give a refund, what is our club doing to communicate our anger at Richmond? Will our club skip that in favor of another tournament next year?
How do we want our coaches treated? Can the club have evaluations for coaches that lead to a more talented, communicative coaching staff?
Can we evaluate leagues to determine what the leagues can do to better serve the kids?
What else can we do now? What other plans should be made?

I apologize for any part I had in morphing this into a political thread. With that said allthingsoccer how does AU intend on handling the faux tryouts since they don't actually have tryouts? Are they going to base their decisions on your play up till activities where suspended? Do they plan on continuing with their plans for early morning practices?
OMG, can we please not post political crap in this forum?
This is the last place where I want to see this crap. Plenty of other sites. this is not one of them.
While I agree with this statement unfortunately politics will creep in from time to time as the soccer world doesn't escape political ramifications. A pulling is back on track comment like yours and others is good to pull us away from that abyss.

All good.
Futsal Gawdess- Very good question. Yes, next year's plan is moving forward regarding practice times. The back office confirmed with the players what option they wanted to move forward with. Marietta High or own home school options.
I know cuts were going to happen in April so I have no idea if the club already had its mind up or not. I'm sure some kids on bubble may be upset they didn't get a chance to earn a spot.
It really is a crazy ending to an already early silly season. By the time practice was canceled, they combined the remaining kids left. I think we had 9-11 kids left from the DA squad. Maybe some injured so didnt see them on the field.
They are very busy giving the boys a lot to do during this crazy time. I know my son is working very hard (maybe even harder than before) to get any edge he can by the time they start up again.

Thanks for info allthingsoccer I definitely feel for those that may be cut in the coming days, weeks, months. I know some of the early cuts were already working on getting on to other DA\ECNL teams for next season. Hope the remaining land somewhere also. Will be hard, not knowing when tryouts will be or who will be coaches as of yet. Definitely going to be a crazy tryout season this year...
Have you all thought about tryouts not happening this year? Instead having the same 2019/2020 teams staying together in 2020/2021 ... just a thought ... I don't see things getting any better by tryout time.

I believe we will definitely have tryouts. It may be summer but it will happen. This is a very severe cold/flue, not Ebola. It may actually dwarf into something that is beneficial=having tryouts every year later in summer when kids have had a summer to work on certain deficiencies.
Why have tryouts when we do now? Lot's can happen for a kid before the teams gather in August. better to have them end of July.

I agree that tryouts should be in the summer in general considering some teams go to Nationals.
This would actually be a great time to move the soccer year to coincide with the age year. Have teams stay together through the Fall as they currently are, or where they were in Fall 2019, and then hold tryouts in January/February. This way there’s no more confusion about what year a kid is, as everyone will play as that age. For example the 2008s next year (2021) would play as 13Us and theyd all actually be 12 & 13, unlike now those fall birthdays would be 11 playing as 13Us.

Just curious, so you had HS juniors playing on different club teams because of birth year? Because that happens now. When I played club ball in HS, everyone on the team was in the same year of HS.
Why are the youth soccer registration standards changing?
The change in age group registration aims to support player development, and goes hand-in-hand with the new standards for small-sided games. Using birth year registration ensures that players are training and playing in the proper age group, each with their own developmental needs.
The new standard also strives to lessen relative age effect (RAE). RAE is a selection bias towards players born earlier in the calendar year. Players born in early months are naturally older and more mature, but not necessarily better players. While the change to birth year registration won’t completely solve the problem, it will make it easier to identify and understand.

Both of the below issues are not necessarily an issue for just this year, but I do see some issues with late July tryouts. Personally I would like to see tryouts later in the summer, but there would be some logistics that would need to be worked out.
One issue with having tryouts at the end of July is uniforms. One teams are determined, players need time to order uniforms and suppliers need time to process the orders & get them out to the players. If tryouts are in late July, August most certainly won't be available for tournaments. This might be a good thing anyhow as August is still hotter than hell and not necessarily safe.
Another issue is people are still trying to get in last minute vacations before school starts. Having tryouts at the end of July would potentially mean players not being available.

I don't see this happening. There are players not happy with where they are, and there are players on the wrong team. While limited tryouts might be an option, there will need to be an opportunity for player movement for next year.

I had never considered the uniform aspect.
I've always hated tryouts so early because you do see some huge growth both in size and technical ability at the early U13/U14 ages over the summer. Our team last year only confirmed 14-15 spots during tryouts and I think that was done to add a few as the season began which we did.
Just curious, so you had HS juniors playing on different club teams because of birth year? Because that happens now. When I played club ball in HS, everyone on the team was in the same year of HS.
It happened the "school year" too because it wasn't actually the school year it was August to July. Different states have different cutoffs. If it really was school year it should have been adjusted to each state. I have a child that plays basketball too and they do it September to August (school year). Interestingly they also have an appeal process for if your kid was held back (or is a grade higher due to skipping a grade) to put them on their classmates' team.
But honestly I think it doesn't really matter because kids go to many different schools anyway (unlike basketball which is set up based on school district). Both my kids' current teams have kids from over 9 or 10 different schools.

Excellent points. I think our method was the best mix of necessary timing (enough time for uniforms, etc) and available time (right when school is out). It was always hot at tryouts but bearable. July is often unbearable. Plus timing of tryouts with the school start is harder due to the districts starting at different times.

My Phd dissertation on the birth year mandate will be published soon.... (i.e. -- use search function...)
The hard part is going to be filling rosters with new players --- if a club has a huge gap in talent from team A to B, at the end of the day you need bodies -- most teams I my guess will stay as is.

It is a generally mild virus...which will kill over 100,000 people world-wide. Possibly even a million.
But who wants to be the one who killed Mimi/Gam-gam/Mi-Maw/Granny/Papi/Paw-Paw/Pops/Grand-Pa/Grandad...just because they wanted to play in a soccer game...

Plus I think many people, myself included, underestimated how contagious it is. It is also a bit more unpredictable than most infectious diseases. So many people who have died were getting a lot better before things got worse and then they died. Most infectious diseases don't behave that way.

I've joked about tryouts being carried out later in the summer but personally, I'm not a fan of late June or July tryouts. We've all done Super-Y in the summer and it is brutally hot in Atlanta. Plus as an ongoing habit, we can't have tryouts way too late into the summer since the money grubbing clubs do actually have to plan for coaches, fields, team dynamics and the appropriate infrastructure needed to support said teams. I know these are trying times, but another mother suggested the following: Conducting tryouts in December? We keep teams the way they currently are, unless someone doesn't want to stay with their current team, then they are free to talk with other clubs if there is a spot for them. Following a robust fall season(fingers crossed), we clear off the first week of December to have full-on citywide tryouts. You open up the recruitment period the Friday before thanksgiving all the way through to tryouts. I'll now sit back and listen to your thoughts, agreements, disagreements or alternate ideas...

Theyre expecting well over that number for the US alone at this point.
Hell, we may be well over that number already as we know that a lot of countries are massively underreporting.
What makes you say that about a global pandemic for which there is no cure?
By the fact of how it's affecting people:
1. Some felt a little down for three days and recovered. 2. Some had it and didn't even know they had it. 3. Some it's more severe and its a week in bed. 4. A very very very very very small amount of people who get this actually die. 5. And by the fact there is no cure for flu either.
Therefore, that's why I say "This is a very severe cold/flue, not Ebola.". Notice, I said "severe" flue. That is not making light of CV19, that is saying CV19 can be very serious.
A model only works based on the numbers and BIASES put into the model. Like that person in the UK who ran a model and said "2.2 million will die in the US"..................so every news organization ran with it. He later changed ONE input into the formula: level of social distancing, and it cut the death rate down to about 50,000........
I'm not claiming this is a joke by any stretch (my family is doing what the "experts" say do by the way. Staying indoors, getting sun and exercise in our own yard).
However, this is BLOWN way overboard. I'll prove my point:
Next January have the CDC/WHO/NIH/CNN/FOX/MSNBC/NPR tell the USA "we have this new virus called XYZ Virus that will be here in 2 weeks. It is expected to infect 60 MILLION Americans and kill 60 THOUSAND!!!!!"
Then, have CNN report daily on the rising death toll, and have them demand answers from the President, have the WH hold daily briefings, and have our leaders tell us to stay home, social distance, etc.
Watch how we react and watch the economy tank again and watch all schools close and watch people go crazy in the streets and at stores.................but THEN have CDC/WHO/NIH/CNN/FOX/MSNBC/NPR/WH all come on air and say this: "oh by the way, we just made up the XYZ name. This is just the 2020/2021 seasonal flu and we wanted to see how people would react".
