So I know this is a very small concern compared to the craziness going on but what and how will tryouts be conducted? You have the whole DPL and SCCL expansion, you got kids trying to crack ECNL and DA rosters, you have some possibly new “United” unannounced league with 6 of the local clubs.
Plus, what happens to the spring piedmont national league season that never happened? Who populates the Fall u14 and u15 piedmont NL brackets since Athena didn’t play their spring?
What a mess

maxx - I was just about to ask a similar question.
And with several of the big Atlanta-based SCCL clubs pulling out of Georgia Soccer, will we see the tryout "season" change? My understanding from this forum is that GA Soccer controlled tryout dates. It would not surprise me at all if (non-GA Soccer) clubs set their own tryout dates going forward.

It is going to be the same cluster#$#@ it was 2 years ago when CF announced they were dropping the DA. Between the lack of practice, the uncertainty with tryouts, the talk of the various leagues and the overall situation regarding this virus - let's just cancel 2020 and get on to 2021.

It will be interesting for sure. With AFU joining the SCCL, that will be their 2nd team (1st being ECNL), correct? If UFA combined their two locations for their SCCL team, that would make it a very strong second level league with limited regional travel, as it should be... Hell you can even call ECRL, though, that will never happen because then the big 6 will have to give up much of the control of the league.

I'm not really finding support for that. I found Florida and NJ NPL teams that had April [2019] tryouts. Regardless, I'm guessing we won't see tryouts until July at the earliest.

As a 05 UFA parent I'd selfishly like to see UFA combine SCCL1-SCCLP-NPL into a great SCCL1 team. You could rotate practices weekly between the three main locations just to keep travel somewhat OK. I know it would be a cluster but that UFA SCCL1 team would be a power:)

I think it will depend on how bad things get. If things may be clearing up I wouldn’t be surprised to see a later tryout date which would be negotiated by the big 5. If it’s bad come June I’d bet the clubs will try to fill their teams with the previous years players without tryouts. They will need the revenue stream to start again.
It’s a long way off but with the uncertainty ahead I think this may be a time where the consumer(parents) should demand some financial safeguards before signing and paying for year long youth sports contracts. But who knows where we will be by then...

However, if just one club did it, I think there may be a chain reaction, because the club that did would get a lot of attention... and players I suspect.

You have a chance to have your kid play the remainder of April on a team you already know they are not on anymore. Totally insane. No one with with the slightest sense of reality thinks there will be May tryouts.

I honestly believe the following is what we will end up seeing... - Some clubs (not all) will return to training at the beginning of May. Games are doubtful at this point but I see training sessions taking place. - Tryouts will take place end of May / beginning of June, just like normal. - Summer SCCL league will take place as initially intended. Maybe I'm just being hopeful, but this is what I believe will end up happening.

My concern is that within 24 hours both the US and Italy will surpass the number of COVID 19 cases that China had/has. While China is down to 50 or fewer new cases per day we are seeing over 10,000 new cases per day. Our country is not responding uniformly to the crisis. It will be interesting to see what happens. Italy's number of cases is starting to slow down but still remains over 5000 per day. We are about 2 weeks behind them as far as our response. Hopefully with our lower population density in most places (obviously not NYC) we won't have the huge increases in all states, but at this point we can only hope and guess. Given that institutions such as the College Board have canceled SAT until the beginning of June we may find out that we are a little pushed back for tryouts. I also hope the SCCL summer season happens. My little one is looking forward to it.

Here is a Reuters article from yesterday describing a scientific study out of U of Washington School of Medicine. This is a middle-of-the-road analysis from the scientific community: www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa-forecast-idUSKBN21E00Z"Louisiana and Georgia are predicted to see high rates of contagion and could see a particularly high burden on their local healthcare systems..." "The analysis assumes CLOSE ADHERENCE to infection prevention measures imposed by federal, state and local governments." Clubs need to start planning now for: A) non-tryout acceptance/placement of children based on an evaluation of this past year Or B) late summer tryouts/evaluations

It needs to be communicated clearly. If they plan to place athletes based on current performance they need to have an early evaluation to allow for the progression/regression of kids over the next 4-5 months and move their teams accordingly. For the older kids this could be a major issue. Even the movement of 2-3 kids off of a higher level team (decides to move clubs, family move, long-term injuries) could have serious ramifications for the teams and athletes below.

Does anybody else think club soccer might suffer SERIOUS pain from income instability right now? I’m still working and thankful for my (15% reduced) paycheck but I would have to think HARD before committing to the next year spending the money that club soccer demands.

I’m still working and thankful for my (15% reduced) paycheck but I would have to think HARD before committing to the next year spending the money that club soccer demands. I suppose that is possible. Especially the travel component! It all depends on how many lose jobs and for how long. My kids are too young for us to have been playing club soccer in 2008 during the last recession. The other issue that could play in for some of the high school kids with higher academic goals is the time spent out of school and how their school managed it. If there is a lot of ground to make up (poorer than usual grades due to the new methods of teaching, no SAT/ACT prep, low AP scores) they may not be able to play high level soccer due to time constraints.

That analysis of currently available data by Washington University (linked above) shows that the rate of deaths from Covid-19 will most likely peak in April and May. If they’re correct, the deaths won’t have stopped in June; they’ll just not be at their peak.
To me that means people won’t be permitted to gather until a month or so later when the hospitals, and their healthcare professionals are able to recover.
If it plays out close to the predictions of their analysis, kids won’t be permitted to return to classrooms, or sports until August. Maybe mid September...
Club soccer could get creative and start with tryouts where all coaches are brought in (they’ve been paid with last years contract money). All hands on deck. Each coach could have two or three kids appropriately spaced apart. Get it done. For the sake of our economy, and people’s welfare, the government will need to come up with guidelines to allow for such things. They can send around government safety inspectors. Heck they can hire some of the 3 million unemployed workers. It would certainly help businesses like the restaurant industry.
One problem that they mention that I haven’t heard anyone else talking about, there may be a resurgence in the Fall.
Also, there is the possibility that it can mutate. *Queue scary movie music.*

I am thankful to have aged out of the club soccer business... just an emeritus member I suppose. Other than refereeing.
I truly feel for friends who are “full time” Soccer coaches. Need to figure out how to lend a hand without putting my own family in financial jeopardy. Are any clubs doing anything in this regard?

But that’s assuming China has been forthcoming with their numbers. And given their past actions, this is not likely to be the case.
A local hospital source tells me they’re expecting to see a peak here in GA by Easter. If that winds up being true, then we should have a better idea by the end of April/beginning of May as to what will need to happen with tryouts or anything else scheduled for late May and beyond.

I really think we will be over the hurdle by end of April. We are more proactive than most european countries. We have more $$ and resources to throw at the problem.

I really think we will be over the hurdle by end of April. We are more proactive than most european countries. We have more $$ and resources to throw at the problem. Um. I don't think we were more proactive. Some places were, yes. But many states were not. New York City waited WAY TOO LONG to close schools and bars and restaurants. They are paying that price now unfortunately. The US numbers are skewed by that one major city. As for more money to throw at it I am not convinced we have that either. What we DO have is a lot of corporations that appear to be ready to step it up and help out on the shortages of equipment...which I think will be helpful. Some may be encouraged or manipulated into helping, but they can help which is important. As for the medical community, I am a physician and have not heard that same optimism on Georgia being through the peak by Easter. I do think Georgia reacted pretty quickly to shut down schools and other things so it may be at the peak by then, but we have to be careful treating this locally when it is clear that there are enough people that will cross borders and pass it around.

Frankly I think Georgia is precariously teetering on the edge. Take a drive around the ATL and see all the young people ignoring the mandates... people are still being dumb, and thus it will continue to get worse.
Parents likely need to threaten taking away phone, internet and car privileges.
Thankfully we're more rural in terms of chances of exposure.

I am amazed at the lack of parents having been more strict, for instance... spring breakers. I found this video that uses GPS to track cell phones of the people that were on spring break and where they went back to afterward. It's really fascinating and scary at the same time. Tracking Spring breakers that traveled during COVID-19I get not freaking out, but I also get being a reasonable parent and telling your kid(s) to stay home this ONE time. Really!! Come on parents!! I get it... if I were their age I would probably say "screw it" and want to go to the beach also... But I also know my parents would have acted like "PARENTS" and told me my ass was staying home.

With no uniform response from state to state across our country I fear it will be a lot longer for us to get back to normalcy- unfortunately it appears our republic was not built for such a task as uniform closures especially in our currently harshly divided political environment.
So yes, clubs will be feeling the downturn too and I’d expect many of the smaller clubs not affiliated with municipalities to close their doors before this is all said and done. I feel no remorse for the clubs that have gotten so big and taken advantage of parents and players for so long but I do have concern for the dedicated, full time coaches that will be out of work.
Next year we would have three players in the select ages with 2 typically being involved with regional leagues and there is absolutely no way I will be signing or paying for a full year of competitive soccer. I hope other parents will push back against the clubs as well demanding financial securities before considering the 20/21 season

Or maybe the tryout period will actually be the most honest one we have seen. Rather than having 100 kids show up and believe that they are being looked at for a specific team, only to be relegated to a lower team that last night.. coaches will reach out and communicate with players to secure them for their teams!?
