Rumors I'm hearing about MLS academy league have been spotty. I've heard mls clubs have been informed of a name of the league and some basic rules etc.
1) Age groups were unclear, have heard u13 - u19, but also just u15, u17 and u19. 2) Season - March - October like the first team - I guess also Feb for games makes training during the day a reasonable option during the summer months - june, july, some of august --- so much for kids having a summer, 2.) Not clear what that means for this season --- would they only play June - Oct..... 3) Combination of MLS and USL academies 4) Have heard no rumors of a non-Professional club being added 5) Have heard non-professional clubs were in discussions with mls, but given uncertainty, couldn't wait even an extra day to NOT commit to boys ecnl. 6) Heard there was still a possibility for non-mls clubs to compete in some manner against MLS clubs but haven't heard enough of details - i.e. use MLS league as extra games etc.
With or Without MLS clubs - boys ecnl became major legitimate - 109 clubs and counting, getting close to 115 total teams.

a rumor that AU will have U16 ECNL team? Have you heard this? only from what you have posted, so I guess yes! Crazy thing is what is one of the biggest complaints about the mls by the players? The travel, and now the teenagers will experience it also.

It will be interesting to See how this will be handled, especially if local clubs are not included in for training. That is a significant demand for travel for MLS only competition. Do they extend their rosters and have more inter-squad training? This would be a strain at U13’s-15 age groups.

These are just Guesses 😉😉
I'll try to take a stab at what the new 62 team MLS league (aka PDA League) could look like...
- I'm thinking a good name would be PDA - I'm thinking they start with 4 Conferences(Eastern, Western, Central and Southern) - I'm thinking they play 20 games a season - I'm thinking each team plays their division opponents twice(room for division rivals) - I'm thinking the season will run from March to September - I'm thinking the playoffs will take 4 from each regional division, but maybe 6 from the Pacific - I'm thinking the playoffs begin in October and end by November - I'm thinking the playoffs involve single game knock-outs. - I'm thinking the four conference champions go on to the top 4 Championship Weekend - I'm thinking they play for the newly formed PDA Cup
Eastern Conference Split into 2 regional divisions... - Northeast (8) - North Atlantic (8)
Central Conference Split into 2 regional divisions... - Lonestar (7) - Mid America (7)
Southern Conference Split into 2 regional divisions... - South Atlantic (8) - South East (7)
Western Conference Split into 2 regional divisions... - Mountain (7) - Pacific (10)
Finally, I'm thinking Atlanta United should have the following in their regional division:
* Birmingham Legion * Inter Miami FC * Miami FC * Nashville FC * Orlando City FC * Tampa Bay Rowdies

Here is a major problem I would see -- and that would be tryouts at some of these clubs and timing of the start of the season (yes, I know mls clubs don't have tryouts, invite only etc)
starting in march would mean some teams would be created jan each year, completely different time than the rest of the country and players are tied to year long commitments to their clubs. Yes -- they always can abandon their teams and jump to a different league with no rules/restrictions.
finishing the season and commitment with your ecnl club could mean playing through june for example.
starting to think march- oct ain't optimal. call me crazy

Just like currently a player can move from from a GaSoccer team to an Ecnl team and not be held under contract/commitment since it’s like apples to oranges. This is probably why MLS wanted to do their own thing and on their own schedule so they don’t have to follow the archaic US Youth soccer rules.

Absolutely, that is the beauty of these leagues, they can recruit and do whatever they want. Good and bad. My point mostly was I don't like the idea of a player having to leave his team in the spring for another club when they still have commitments to the team. Puts the kid in a tough spot -- the grass isn't always greener, and the kid should be allowed to complete their commitment to his team, friends and boys without having to deal with bailing on them mid season for an mls club. soccer teaches life lessons, commitment to a team and others is one of the greatest life lessons. I'd never would have bailed on my teammates mid season before state cup or regionals or nationals. times are different now for sure, but don't sell your soul to chasing the USL soccer dream... problem is in the good ole days the team came first, now adays its all about the individual -- i've seen a lot of selfish acts in my day -- maybe i'm the sucker, but to me team always comes first.

I get what you are saying though I think the issue of leaving in the spring is not as big of a deal as the potential to be without a club in October if the player is released from the MLS team. March is during the high school season (here anyway) and the clubs are doing some showcases then, but State cup is basically going to be a thing of the past with most of these kids' teams unless State Cup opens for ECNL clubs. Most of the kids will be on the highest level teams. So the only "important" event will be ECNL finals. In some ways I understand your point about commitment to a team but I do not think people should sacrifice their future for that of the collective team. There are similar examples of this that happen on a smaller scale all of the time. What about those kids that miss out on their teams' games due to youth national team commitments? How is this any different? It is important to be a team player as much as possible, but there comes a time when sacrificing yourself for the good of others is not the best idea.

Forgot about the other side of it. Kid gets let go in October - he’s without a team until the following August. Ouch!

Someone would pick up a good player mid-season. No different than picking up a player that has moved.

Someone would pick up a good player mid-season. No different than picking up a player that has moved. Maybe. Many clubs would. The player would likely be really good. The problem is that the choices might be limited. Plus it could also hurt someone else on the team that picked him up and displace that person's playing time. Snowball effect.

If a team is at 18, 19 or 20 kids, hard to add kids -- I've seen kids leave mls clubs and their aren't even guarantees at their own clubs. I've seen some older kids leave Atlanta United for example that given the lack of PT, they were not shoe ins with a clubs when they came for their evaluations. Look -- yes, if the kid is a stud, people will find a way. next issue --- scholarship money is gone usually by first week of August -- that's a big issue also, I've seen that a lot, kid from random club wants to get added during the season, but can't afford to play -- club doesn't add them because of no scholarship money left. Looks like topdrawer got its hands on the "secret" mls document - will leave it at that: www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-soccer-articles/mapping-out-a-new-mls-development-league_aid47976

Georgia ECNL top teams regularly handle many of the teams in SE. They should have admitted they were wrong and had top teams in Big 6 with the MLS clubs play. Great competition and more cost effective for all rather than having the "I'm taking my ball home" mentality. This too will fail just as DA.

Yeah, MLS and USL academies should join ECNL (as their own division). Play out-of-division games with local clubs (its good for everyone).

IMO Lavers should create the ECNL-pro league. Maybe 4 divisions. Schedule games which count for the MLS/USL clubs conference standings but don't count for the non-pro club teams. WIN-WIN.

atlfutboldad that would be a great idea, thereby taking away the day to day management of league games from the MLS. Jokingly, I would say instead of going thru ECNL, the MLS academies should band together and create chaos by asking the GAL\DPL folks to run the league concurrently with the GAL that is being created. That would really upend things on the soccer landscape...

MLS has done such a great job as has DA. The results speak for themselves regarding player development on the world level. The free market has spoken...we all know which organization has done the best job.
