I don't know why AU waited that long to join ECNL, unless they were waiting on the MLS to somehow get the ball rolling. But as other posters have already said, it appears MLS is not looking to invest in player development. Buying players ready to play must be cheaper.

Not one club has a full roster of its "own" developed players. Yes, I'm sure it cheaper to scout talent and bring them on. However, Tony's mission from the start has been "2" pros a year. Keep in mind, AU has over 20+ "Homegrown" status players playing college ball. The player may have been offered but selected the College route. Some might not been offered cause AU doesnt have that that position need at that time. You would think however, AU would sign HG players to resell. Maybe thats what the u15/17 "MLS" league will be for. To showcase this talent all over..Not sure. We are in our 4/5 year as an Academy. We are a toddler in the soccer development world.

Can someone remind me how many teams/clubs does this make now for the ECNL Boys SE division?

I’m confused as to why a MLS Club like Atlanta United would not be in the new MLS league?

I’m confused as to why a MLS Club like Atlanta United would not be in the new MLS league? My guess would be an ECNL SE with 11 "local" teams v an MLS academy league with 3 "local" teams (LSA, SSA and Nashville)

We are a toddler in the soccer development world. 2 pros a year would be great and I would take it any day when you compare that to the better academies in the world. In contrast, it's sad to see what happens in other MLS academies. Most talent will not develop in the MLS by default, and USL academy will take time, if ever. In the meantime ECNL is the best hope for now but we can't hold our breath given the broken system of youth soccer, and lack of quality resources weather human or otherwise to develop top talent.

Observations: - Great way to (scout)see more kids play in games vs a practice or tryout - - Reduce travel
Questions Will the older academy boys have a spring season or will they be allowed to play high school soccer?

I’m confused as to why a MLS Club like Atlanta United would not be in the new MLS league? They are in the new MLS league So they are in the MLS league and will play those 3 MLS DA teams, and ALSO participate in the ECNL league ? Sounds like a win / win.

At this point COVID is probably the reason why this decision was made so late... travel will be VERY restricted and ATL needs teams to play without a plane ride and 14 day quarantine. Just logistics...

They would have to travel far just to get a game in and no one wouldn’t be close to them, locally. Storyline sounds familiar....like another local Atlanta club we know, it I will just sit back and eat my popcorn 🍿 on this one.

Yes, they will play in both, excluding the U15 and U17 teams, they will be MLS only. Makes you think, how they suddenly cross pollinated leagues and folks are good with it. Maybe throw all these leagues out the window and just play...

then their not very sharp -- it's been obvious for years that an MLS only league would require enormous amounts of travel
the day they got wind of the demise of the DA, if they truly wanted a "league" welcoming all DA clubs they should have arranged a call with all the clubs DOCs and been transparent on the goals and direction of the league and what was planned.
Simple solution -- feds hand over "the handbook" and mls just takes it over. keeps things status quo for a few years then tweaks them accordingly to make the league a better competitive fit for all those involved.

I would say the MLS teams saw how ineffective DA was long term. By joining ECNL, they have an opportunity to view other teams in what could be argued as now having the most talent. Good move IMO for MLS clubs.

I doubt Atlanta United is joining ECNL so they can look at other teams who have better talent. It could just be a way to get more matches for their players. I don’t get why people get so hung up on leagues/teams versus individual players? Last I checked, individuals make their debuts, not entire teams.

Last time I checked teams were made up of individuals. In your logic, College Coaches would go to all levels to recruit. Having been through that process with offers from colleges at all levels, they don't. They go where the most talented players play.

“By joining ECNL, they have an opportunity to view OTHER TEAMS”. In your logic, college coaches only recruit at the highest level, which up until a few months ago was DA, not ECNL. I am speaking about BOYS not girls.

It helps AU in identifying talent and keeping tabs on progress for needs (positions) they may have. Kind of fill in the gaps.
By playing in ECNL they can concentrate resources on U15 and U17 MLS league.
I think its a win win for everyone. Players have a chance in being scouted by AU.
MLS league Colleges can see up and coming ID'd talent in the u15 age group. The u17 age group you would think will be bigger College focus.
Its just like targeted marketing. The ad set is more narrower now. A college recruiter may look at MLS U17 player pool first.
Then focus on ECNL standings pool.

Ecnl event in Florida kid played in had 75 College coaches scouting. All the kids that wanted to play DI are playing DI. This is boys.

Is it confirmed that Atlanta United is only putting their 04 (U17) and 06 (U15) teams in the new MLS league? Are their 08, 07, 05, and 02/03 teams definitely all playing ECNL? Can anyone confirm these ages are on the ECNL schedule?

They were on the Southeast team list from the ecnl website about two weeks ago now they are not. We are scheduled to play them twice in the fall but maybe that has changed. Have a buddy who's son plays on AU 08 and I knew before he did that they joined ecnl so who knows. Time will tell.

MLS is extremely strict on player process for Covid, this could delay start of the league.

It is going to be very interesting to monitor this: Not sure if team travel is a good idea and then putting 3-4 kids in a room together etc.
Add in I assume AU will not be hosting any games at their training facility as well -- I'd isolate my first team as much as possible an wouldn't want out of town parents and children near my training facility given the current situation.
