So we are new to the Metro Atlanta academy soccer landscape and what a landscape it is I have found. I wanted to ask a question to see if this is a normal occurrence each year since the 2023-2024 tryout session announcements are looming, but why would a soccer club charge a fee for an ID camp or even tryouts?

As the other poster said, because they can. At one club less cynically they hand out tshirts with numbers for tryouts which I guess covers the cost of them.

“Because they can” valid response, but if the other branches are not charging a fee, then how can one branch request the fee and the others don’t? Is each branch self governed?

Each club sets their own tryout protocols.

The club could also want to see if you're serious about getting ID'd, right? You're not going to pay if you're not serious about coming.

Tryouts, aka the most difficult days of a metro Atlanta youth soccer player and family, are upon us - like a swam of locusts (!). Good grief. The garbage going on between clubs, coaches, and directors borders on the insane.
As someone that's been around this game in the ATL for a long stretch, since the early days of Datagraphics, Concorde, and the Buckhead Bucks, if this game is truly all about the kids, then the adults in the room must come to the rescue. If you don't know what I'm referring to, then count yourself lucky. If you do know, then please implore your club, coaches, and directors to behave professionally and responsibly - and actually in the best interest of your kids, all of them.
It starts with ceasing the threats against current players (children - youth) for exploring potential new clubs and opportunities. Maybe they want to play with friends or school mates. Or maybe, just maybe they want to try something different.
Good lord. They are kids. And, this is still just a game, their game! It's supposed to be fun.
rant over - out

Here's an idea: Open a dummy email account and send out a mass email to another club's members trying to recruit them to your club. Misrepresent your results and lie about things that haven't happened. True story. There are some really desperate coaches out there.

Some people call it "Silly Season" for a reason.
Unfortunately the only thing that seems to matter is the bank account of the club and thus the wallet of the directors. What's best for the kids? Whatever the directors say. This more than likely won't change anytime soon because parents don't want to speak out, in fear of retribution from the club.
By the way, I'm not speaking about any 1 club specifically. They all do it.

That email from UFA is kind of crazy, considering the crapfest that Elite 64 is. UFA is going to have to do a lot more than provide standings. My kid could lose every match this upcoming season, and she would stay at AFU a) because her team is phenomenal (on and off the field) and b) I will never have to worry about any of the AFU coaches sending out an email like that.
Yikes.

While your point is valid - sending out an email like that is a different low. Thing is, we all know clubs recruit - especially at the older age groups. It's after the May 1 contact date - if you want to send out a mass email to promote your club, you aren't committing a violation. So why not put your name to the email and be upfront about it. Also - promote your club without the lies. Being anonymous and lying isn't a good look and that's what makes it seem desperate.

Sometime ago I found this forum when I was looking for some actual information on something soccer related. I have stayed for the drama because I just can't seem to look away from all the jabs, conjectures, unfounded theories, sales jobs to try to get people to change clubs, etc. I just couldn't help but comment on this one. This email is terrible. I sure hope UFA leadership / management didn't send it out because shame on them if they did. But I'm skeptical about everything in this soccer world. So how do we know a parent or single coach or someone else didn't send it unbeknownst to their leadership? And how did this person, whoever it is (or the group) get the email addresses. Were the email addresses accurate? If so, any chance the email addresses came from inside AFU? I have so many questions and this doesn't all add up. Although the drama factor his high, which is why I follow!

As stated in other posts, the UFA email is not really recruiting, it’s desperation. Top ECNL boys programs, like NASA and CF Platinum, will recruit certain top players privately, but this email is not that.

The speculation is that it’s James Harris, the new ECNL girls director at UFA. I was told “everyone knows he did it” and that Iggy would not do something like that. Harris is not well thought of in the coaching circles here, I know that much. Supposedly the email is retaliation for the coach who moved from UFA to AFU last year and took a bunch of his former players.

Well it is an interesting theory considering we have not seen this type of email before, or if it happened it was kept quiet. New guy seems like the obvious one to blame. I would not be surprised about anyone from any club doing this sort of thing though. There is no class in the youth soccer world at the Director level tbh
