I believe MaxPreps rankings are 100% computer based. Pius & Marist have 4/5 losses each, on the girls side, which probably hurts them a great deal within the computer algorithms. Granted those losses were against top competition, but they are losses. Maybe that explains some of their strange predictions… Maxpreps rankings are completely computer based, and quite flawed. They general calculation is driven by wins vs losses as well as schedule strength. Without knowing the actual formula and how they weight those items, I know for sure that total wins plays a huge role in where you rank and is overly important to that ranking. Here's an example. On the girls basketball side, you can look mid-season at the 7A rankings and the schools in region 1 (deep south) will be ranked very highly. Because of distance and travel, they play a ton of much smaller schools during the regular season and rack up wins that metro schools don't get due to tougher schedules. When those same south Georgia teams match up with decent metro schools, they get destroyed whether it's in state playoffs or mid-season tourneys. But, because they have tons of wins, they stay highly ranked even though it's clear they are not at the same level. Go check the playoff results. Region 1 continually gets blown out in round 1 by teams viewed as "worse" by the Maxpreps methodology. In reality, it's a pretty pointless ranking until they figure out a better formula. I can only imagine it gets even worse as a measurement in sports with fewer games.

With the current classification system (8 total classifications), I say you leave it. Society is already doing enough to take away opportunities for kids to play school sports, I don't think we need to add to it.
As shown above, there are #4 seeds who pull off upsets and beat #1 seeds. Yes there are blowouts, but there are blowouts in the regular season as well. If those schools want to field teams, then we should let them play.
Regarding multiple games per week in playoffs, I am not a fan. I think that favors the bigger/better teams with more depth and makes it even harder for upsets to happen. Why do we need to end everything mid-late April? Soccer in Georgia is a spring sport, why is everything starting early in January? I would actually prefer we return to tryouts in the middle of January and the regular season not starting until February...though honestly I would prefer an even later start.

I assume because they don't want playoffs going into final exams. As it is, they are planning to move the whole season one week earlier (probably to be done before May). At our school, final exams for seniors are May 12-13 this year (the week after the final game), all other grades final exams are the following week. And college ID camps and club ID camps start getting revved up next weekend.

Any 6A boys upsets brewing tonight? Centennial seems to have given Dalton a good game last night and the Johns Creek situation was pretty unfortunate for the rest of team - I understand several players sat out for missing practice.

I understand the concern over final exams, but why does it only seem to be an issue for soccer? Tennis is just getting playoffs under way, while baseball & lacrosse haven't started yet. From what I can tell, it is only soccer that is moving earlier & earlier. Soon it won't even be a real spring sport, they will want tryouts between Thanksgiving & Christmas, so they can start the season the first week of January. Hopefully if they keep starting earlier they mandate heaters at the stadiums up her in the northern part of the state.

Last year we know people who had to choose between walking at graduation and competition for a state title! What kind of choice is that!?!? Even for state meet we had concerns because of possible conflicts with AP exams. AP exams may also play a role with the soccer playoffs. TBH HS is packed with too many activities, too much stress, too much overlap, too many sacrifices between sports and other activities.

Prediction Riverwood boys lose early in playoffs. Wouldn’t be all that surprising - 2 starters out with injury so goals are hard earned. I was thinking they’d make it to C. Gwinnett but you might be right.

Was anyone at the Dalton/River Ridge girls game last night and/or know the details of what happened? I heard there was some kind of brawl and 5 red cards were handed out.

Glad I don’t gamble - I was way off tonight. But #23/#16 parent is always good for a snark.

RR player made a physical play (not overly) and a few Dalton players just started physically attacking her. One parent jumped over the fence onto the field. Perhaps the parent of the child being attacked??? Not sure. Poor showing for those players that attacked her.

Upset pick in boys 6A tonight: 4 seed Buford over 1 seed Lassiter Yeah this was a bad call if you had seen either team play.

Upset pick in boys 6A tonight: 4 seed Buford over 1 seed Lassiter Yeah this was a bad call if you had seen either team play. I know kids on both teams. I felt Buford had much tougher strength of schedule. Did not know that Buford’s coach would run suicides the day before the game and run a midday practice the day of the game.

Question: best boys team this year?
Would be fun to see an FA Cup style tournament. Most years would be dominated by bigger division teams, but this year there are some teams in lower divisions that have already shown the ability to beat larger classed teams.

I think it gets tough from here on out. Really anyone's game. There should be some GREAT 2nd round games in Girls 7A: Harrison/Alpharetta Peachtree Ridge/ Campbell Walton/Roswell Hillgrove/Dunwoody West Forsyth/Brookwood Boys 7A too: Pebblebrook/Peachtree Ridge Hillgrove/Meadowcreek Harrison/Dunwoody Parkview/Lambert Forsyth Central/Brookwood Pebblebrook Boys (a 1 seed) got a tough draw. First round played a 4 seed South Gwinnett team who was really a 1 seed that was stripped of wins for using ineligible players and not sitting the mandatory two game red card suspension but still managed to squeak in as a 4 seed. Pebblebrook won 2-1. Now has to play Peachtree Ridge that destroyed South Forsyth, the defending state champions. I agree in 7A there is no easy road. Everone will have to win multiple tough games. I wish I could watch multiple games. Big games come down to 1 or 2 moments. I think all of the remaining schools have multiple D1 commits.. Should be very exciting and interesting.

I don't think I'm doing this response properly, but I'm trying to reply to the posts about Girls 7A. Based on Eurosport Scoreboard rankings, you have 4 of the top 10 girls teams (2, 4, 7, and 10) in one quadrant, while you have just one top 10 team (#9) in the other quadrant. I'm sure it'd be too big of an undertaking (or too controversial) to try to properly seed the teams, but it's too bad that some of the best match-ups will occur in earlier rounds.

It does somehow seem a bit unfair that some teams are in really good regions where the 4th best team is really competitive, and then in some regions there may only 1 or 2 competitive teams at BEST. For instance, Dunwoody(7A) girls had to pull it out in an overtime win (1-0) with a 1 vs 4 seeded matchup, yet the Region 1 champs lose to Region 3's forth place team, (1-4).

Look at 6A girls. On one side you still have Johns Creek, Lassiter, Glynn Academy, Buford, Chattahoochee, Houston County (all top 10 teams). On the other side you have Cambridge...ok and Richmond Hill.
There are multiple brackets this year that are very lopsided IMO.

The brackets are set up way before the season even starts, so everyone knows which region slots play randomly I guess and the only thing they break up is each region so they can't play each other until a semifinal. I'd hazard to guess that since there isn't an 'official' rankings that this is the 'fairest' way to do it, but really it's just random and actually gives some teams a chance to look to dump a game at the end if they'd get a better draw...

It does cause some crazy match ups. But yes, these brackets are set at the beginning of the year and are the same for ALL sports so it is probably as fair as it gets. Some schools might be football powerhouses but not soccer. Or tennis...

Yes I agree. Most didnt realize the brackets were set way before the season started. Actually the boys and girls brackets were set the same. It was randomly decided that Region x would play region y and such. Fair or not it was random. From my perspective no matter how it is determined you have to go through several great teams to win state. I think 7A is very even. I dont know about other classifications. In 7A only one region (Region 3) still has all 4 teams in the tournament. Is that a factor of them playing against Region 1 (southern part of the state)? Only time will tell. Most considered Region 3 to be the toughest with Walton, Harrison, North Paulding and Hillgrove typically carrying great teams...

Back to loaded brackets, the 4th team in region 7 (River Ridge) was ranked #9 by eurosportscoreboard and probably had the best chance "on paper" of going in to advancing to the final 4 on their side of the bracket when the games started. While the quadrant 2nd team region 7 Chattahooche (6) is in probably is the "group of death" with Buford (1), Houston County (5) and Glynn (8).

And I'm sorry to any folks on here from Region 1, it's not a shot at you, the talent pool in the metro Atlanta area is just to great to overcome for the rural area down south. It is random and therefore as a fair as it probably could be, it's just rough for teams that are not in a Region 3 scenario that have much harder competition to start off with.
