So they know who they want before you even get there, right? They didn't even watch one field of players at our "tryout." Great passing, smart goals scored... and coaches were not even looking. What age group did you see this happen?

With ODP, be persistent. Contact them and say you would like for your child to get another shot. It seems more political like years previous again this year. Show that you really want it, but your child has to be able to compete.

My daughter said that the 3 '06G coaches didn't speak to any girls specifically... they just switched them out here and there plus kept their eyes on the scrimmage.
I'm ready for this process to be over and know on what basis they are judging them on. Their wasn't a lot of scoring which indicates a lot of defending. A lot more NTH players than I expected.

My daughter (06) said several coaches came up and asked her name during the short side games before the main scrimmage. I don't know if she was on the radar beforehand or not... but she did get invited back this weekend.

I only saw David (06G head coach) talk to a couple girls in the large scrimmages. I noticed him talk to a girl wearing a black shirt who scored the first goal. Be bold, score goals, get noticed.

Well, that will get you noticed as a forward, but they look at small and large scrimmage work. I see where the girls 09 and 07 are posted, as is the 09 boys. Hopefully the rest of the pools are posted soon.

Friends kid played for 4 years on boys side. They looked at center mids for lots of the players. Center mids can play anywhere on the field. Their kid transitioned to outside back, started and made the Region pool.

We saw the '07 pool posted yesterday and saw that we made it. My daughter is thrilled to have made it, and just as happy that one of her teammates also made it with her.

Don't expect too much from ODP or you will be disappointed. Be happy to make the pool and take part in every training your player can. Tell your kid to make friends with players from other teams and not just stay in the bubble of players from their club. Going into ODP with the wrong aspirations and expectations is why a third to half of the pool don't return every year. Those who enjoy the process and extra training return.
The 06G pool currently has 43 and I expect 2-3 more to be added. That's a lot of players to get playing time for at the proposed friendlies and the inter-regional event (assuming they have it). And they will get EQUAL playing time at those events. The goal in those games is NOT to win, its to get all the pool players a chance to be seen.
After that event, the smaller state team of 18 will be chosen FOR THE SUMMER regional event (again should they have it). The best bet is to show out that your player is good individually and a good team player IN PRACTICE.

Yep- if they play one half they won’t the next. Winning is not the goal. The trainings are a good way for your kid to make friends at other clubs and challenge themselves. And as always-enjoy the ride.

So every age group is showing player pool except the 04/05? From what I heard probably the most competitive and largest turnout age group. Can someone explain why there is not a separate 04 and 05 team, to me seems too early to be combining players? 05 girls are freshman or sophomores in high school why are they being squeezed into a 04 team and being forced to play up? Why limit you player pool but instead have separate 04 and 05 teams so you can better evaluate players and see who blooms as maturity and physical growth continues?

when is the final pick for age groups? Probably depends. For 06B we haven’t even had a practice yet due to a rainout and a power outage. First one was supposed to be this Friday at Brook Run but was rescheduled to Sunday in Villa Rica. I know of several boys who won’t be in attendance (some already on the team but others who are trying out) due to game conflicts. So due to the above, I cannot imagine any final decisions until sometime after the second practice which is currently scheduled for Friday Dec 4th.

Boys ODP Landscape: So, DA folded last spring and a lot of great players have entered the market and are considering ODP this fall. And as certain as the sun rises in the east, ODP decides to ignore that and retain all their players from last year, leaving only a handful of spots open based on former players moving, former players not interested, or increasing their pools slightly. ODP should be the state all-star team and yet most MLS Next & ECNL players consider it a step down. Lost opportunity for Georgia Soccer to be relevant.

Boys ODP Landscape: So, DA folded last spring and a lot of great players have entered the market and are considering ODP this fall. Glad to hear it...heard that several/many ECNL coaches discouraged their players from attending And as certain as the sun rises in the east, ODP decides to ignore that and retain all their players from last year, leaving only a handful of spots open based on former players moving, former players not interested, or increasing their pools slightly. Can only tell you what I’ve heard from the 06 group and that is that @15 aren’t returning and the pool size will increase (we will see). ODP should be the state all-star team and yet most MLS Next & ECNL players consider it a step down. Lost opportunity for Georgia Soccer to be relevant. Maybe that’s why I only saw a few ODP players from last year at tryouts/practice 🤷🏻♂️. Or maybe it was a conflict of schedule. I think if the ECNL / MLS coaches buy in, it will be an All Star team...but this year is weird-the players from last year didn’t get a full season. Not sure they will get much of one this year with cases soaring.

My take on ODP. The year of the split age group my son's team was moved to ECNL from DA. They were the young ones and the older group were good, so our entire team moved to ECNL for the year. A lot of players played ODP. We went to the showcase in NC I believe and my son scored 5-6 goals during play. Then he played HS. Well during the selections to go to Bama for regionals, he was not invited. However all the kids who did not play DA were. He would have went but was snubbed. ODP is political, not worth it in my opinion. In 2016 when he made region 3 ODP pool and was invited to the Costa Rica International tournament and we were told that he was not allowed to go because he had signed with DA. I think they held it against him. ODP will never have the best players in the state on it due to politics. It really is and was laughable. When my son played ODP, his DA team would have crushed them. Even now, the ODP team would get crushed by most of the ECNL teams.

We're stuck in a situation where my player is ADAMIT about staying with her current club ... due to coach shenanigans and her being a late bloomer ... it's been difficult for her to climb the ranks ... ODP gives her the ability to show she should be playing higher at her club than she currently is.

If you feel your player isn't getting respect at your club, its probably time to change clubs. Your kid will get a better look at another club, everyone is looking for NEW talent. Playing your kid up doesnt serve a club other than possible wins. You're already paying them and they aren't taking talent from the competition.
We are im the same position and will likely move in May.
Either that or you gotta grin and bear it.
