I'm curious what politics come into play once the player is in the Pool. We are doing our first year of ODP - I'll be curious to see how it plays out... any examples/insights?

We will see. An example would be a large group of players from a particular club being selected to the state team or invited to regional tryouts.

What about selecting the best players no matter what league or club they play? Isn't it also possible that multiple players from -say- an ECNL team are selected in the absence of other high level players just because they are better?

Would you make claim if large number were selected from one team on one club but Coach was from different team and different club? This happened in recent years. Picking players is imperfect...look at AU this year and they are professionals.

Advice, buddy up with the team manager and coaches of your son's ODP team.

Let's just say the people invited to the pool in Bama the last year my son did ODP in no way shape or form were better soccer players by a mile. Not kidding. He did what he had to do at the showcase. The people that were selected did zero at the showcase. Those kids were on ECNL teams and lower when my son was playing DA and killing it. The only reason we did ODP the second time around was because he was not playing DA due to split age group and he could. I asked him if he wanted to do it(extra touches and practices were at AU practice fields)and he said yeah. We were going back to DA in the fall anyway, however it was laughable that they left him off the list. Again get to be buddies with the team manager and coach. That should help.

Wouldnt put a lot of creedence on AUs selection of players...look at the results of the homegrowns. As I said, its not an easy process. Know an ECNL team that never lost to AU in 3 scrimmages.

We did ODP a few years back. It was still an honor at the time to get accepted. We did it for two years. Both fall sub regionals were cancelled and we played a total of one local spring showcase. We got maybe 15 practices, three showcase games, two jerseys, a backpack and a hoodie out of the deal in those two years.

I'm curious what politics come into play once the player is in the Pool. We are doing our first year of ODP - I'll be curious to see how it plays out... any examples/insights? There are two camps of parents that do ODP. One camp enjoys the honor of having their child selected, acknowledges the great training opportunity and friendships made for their child with kids from numerous GA programs. The other camp is focused on the name "Olympic Development Program" and is bound to be disappointed when their child is not selected for regional, or beyond regional. If you go in worried about the politics of ODP, you're working your way into Camp #2. I would encourage you to shift your experience into Camp #1 and let the rest take care of itself.

ODP has been second rate for what 11 years. Before that, sure. Maybe in the future sure, but the last 10 for me.

For all of ODP’s shortcomings, they can only select from those that register. Did a boatload of high quality (we’ll say ECNL for argurment’s sake) players register for “tryouts” and get turned down at this point? Or are the presumed best players simply not interested? And similar to DA before, I’ve heard that MLS-Next players are not allowed to participate.
Imagine if every eligible kid in the state was interested. The talent, the politics, oh my.

I am only aware of one high level player that chose to try out in my older kid's age group. She made it. There are some ECNL players on the team but I would say less than 20% and I know of some ECNL kids who have chosen not to return to ODP this year. The best of the best girls (youth national team camp players) are not doing ODP

True but if ODP was the best of the best it would be better than their own teams (theoretically). That is what ODP used to be (and maybe still is in some parts of the country that don't have ECNL/GA)

It’s still good for those who don’t have the opportunity to play ECNL, MLS, etc. There are some talented players in GA that don’t live in the North Metro.

On the girls side, I think that the best 18 in the pools could probably beat almost any team in the state save the top 2-4 ECNL teams.

I still think ODP is worthwhile to a lot of players even those on ECNL, MLS ,GA teams. More time of the ball and different perspective is great. It is all what you want it for and if it fits your needs/goals. My younger one will tryout next year if she can improve her work rate

That is what ODP used to be (and maybe still is in some parts of the country that don't have ECNL/GA) For as long as I can remember there had been great teams over the years that could beat their ODP age group. Just not as many as today. Few of them have National or Regional Championships and some of their players have gone pro or worn the USNT jersey or both. And there are two sides to it. Again, for as long as I can remember going back to the pre DA/ECNL era, perceptually or not, there have been "politics". Folks always blamed ODP coaches for being biased towards certain players or clubs, and often called out some of the big recruiters. ODP was a huge recruiting ground on and off the field and not much was truly done to stop it. ODP is not but can be a great program. But it has to get better and everyone has to buy into it to trust the process. That will take time and work to earn both the trust and respect.

Wonder if the best 18 will get a chance to play together, or they'll just have even teams. Many top players couldn't or wouldn't tryout. Those top players who did tryout made it. Yet the talent gap is noticeable which leads me to believe they either made mistakes on kids they selected last year and had to take back, or had to take a certain # of kids.

If they do like they have done in years past, you will have 2 teams of 22. The teams seemed pretty even. I’ve heard (not confirmed), that there may be as many as 3 teams (of 18 or 22?).

In our kids 4 years of playing, the state pool was always around 40 to 50 players give or take. From there the group selected to go to Alabama was 18. Were there a few players missed being selected, of course. Were there a couple who may should not have been selected of course. However the Alabama team was always the best 18. Parents who claim politics, remember if your kid was not selected, your club DOC can make a call to get them another look. If they dont or wont do this then that should let you know something...

Yep-for regionals/region camp the top 18 go. I would agree +\- a few the best go. No, my kid wasn’t one of them-I was fine with that.

Definitely agree they got it right for Region pool when our kid went. Had 5 or 6 every year make Region from kids team. All were well deserving. Bashers of ODP typically are DA backers or kid wasnt picked group. They can have their opinion. Kids off our kids team picked for region all were offered D1 or signed D1.

COnflict with SCCL events? I looked at the schedule and couldn't find a single SCCL game after 12/13 that wasn't in 2021.
My question is does SC (or AL) have a big enough pool to have 2 games per age group? Most of the girls GA pools have 50 players. IMO they really should cap the pool at 44 players (including 4 keepers). More than that and players won't get a whole half to showcase their abilities, and that should be the goal of the program.
