Agree. Buford is pretty stacked with top level players. I would never have under estimated them. Cambridge is stacked too. Let's be honest. How many sports is Buford NOT stacked in? I mean they have multiple football final four appearances. I know their girls softball team won state recently. Their cross country is always strong. Their basketball usually does pretty well too. I am sure Buford people could tell me many more... And don't forget that their best sport the past couple years has been Baseball. They're led by a super strong Junior class and are legitimately ranked number 1 in the country. They have at least 3 and possibly 4 or 5 that are absolutely getting drafted out of high school. 2 will go early 1st round!

Buford is very good at recruiting. Lots of kids move into the City of Buford for high school. With there facilities and the area it would be easy to get parent/kids to move into the area. The school as well as the athletic facilities can compare to many colleges. The football stadium scoreboard alone is worth a pretty penny. Much nicer then my colleges soccer biard

If you live outside of Buford, you can attend for something like $2,000 per kid. One of my good friends lives in Sugar Hill and he sent his kids to school there and still has one there right now, which is how I know about it. You do have to get accepted, of course, but I think with the large size of the school it's not overly difficult to get in.

I never knew this, but sure enough if you go to the Buford City Schools website, it's right there. $2000 per year for a non-resident. Surprised more school districts don't do something like this to try and attract kids. Seems to be a loophole around the whole recruiting thing. While we can't recruit you to play at our school, you can apply to attend and pay $2000.

They are expected to take all Honors classes. We know quite a few kids that have been accepted, but also know quite a few that have not. The other catch is, as of now, you can only get in for Kindergarten or 9th grade. So, if you are a High School Sophomore or later, you are out of luck, unless you move into the district.

Not to mention that Mill Creek is located in Buford as well and... they were undefeated in 7A and only lost to W.Forsyth 2-1 and have a National team player there too. If not for the Region matchups they should have advanced much further. Actually Mill Creek is located in Hoschton. While it is a little less than 10 miles from Buford HS, it isn't even the closest to them. Lanier, Flowery Branch & Mountain View are all closer. The new Seckinger HS will also be closer. I think a big reason Buford is so good in many sports is their city Rec. program. They have something for just about every sport and make it easy for kids to get involved. They also seem to take sports more seriously than many others.

Interesting, my buddy never mentioned that. And while his kids aren't dumb by any means, I'd be surprised if all 3 were taking honors classes. That being said, I can definitely see them attaching some type of academic requirements to the kids who aren't in the city and pay the tuition to attend. Can't just take everyone, especially at that low cost. When my buddy was complaining about the cost to me, I reminded him that we have no option like that in Dunwoody and that private schools are about 5 to 15 times Buford, depending on the grade level and the school. Immediately he realized how much of a bargain they're getting there . . . . .

I know Jefferson City Schools allows for out of district students to apply and attend if they are accepted and pay minimal tuition.

City of Marietta takes out of City students too. It’s like $150 a month / $1500 a year, and they have to maintain a certain GPA. They don’t have to be Honors just at least B students.

The fact that you can only enter in K or 9th grade illustrates how this is more about sports than anything. Compare the Buford plan (https://4.files.edl.io/56a6/01/06/21/112726-4b715127-ba52-4264-8f8f-2b839c64161d.pdf) to the Marietta plan (https://www.marietta-city.org/studentregistration). Marietta lets students enter at any grade and warns that entering students are not eligible for varsity sports for a year due to GHSA rules. Buford only allows 9th grade entry because student residency status does not start until the 9th grade under GHSA guidelines. Buford is a city of 16,000 people with a high school of 1450 students. Marietta is a city of 60,000 people with a high school population of 2,500 students.

Anyone know how it is determined what site each of the final games will be played at for each region (boys/girls)?
All the GHSA says on their website right now is four potential locations.
McEachern High School Duluth High School Mercer University Savannah Memorial Stadium

Interesting on the girls side, between AAA and AAAAAA finals there are 5 private schools, 1 charter school and 2 public schools.
And why is Savannah a finals location??? All finals should be in Atlanta. Kennesaw St and Georgia State.

From what I read, Lambert scored in the 7th minute, and then held on for the rest of the game to win 1-0. Walton had chances, but just could not get the ball in the back of the net. Final will be a regular season rematch between West Forsyth and Lambert, which Lambert won in PKs. West best player was red carded in the 18th minute, and the West defense played a great game after that to hold Lambert scoreless. Should be a good one.

The finals locations are definitely a head scratcher. Why not let these kids play the championship games in Mercedes Benz? It's a perfectly good soccer field, and they let the high school football finals be held in there as well. Absent that, there are high quality soccer stadiums all over the city to play games in.

One, the Dome is an indoor facility and not a great unless it’s for football. Two, it’s extremely expensive and there wouldn’t be anywhere near as many fans attend it to justify such a massive venue. AU plays Saturday night so GHSA would have had to rented out the dome for the entire weekend a year prior from now. Three, if two South Georgia teams advanced to the finals why the hell would they want to drive to Atlanta for a final when Savannah is just as good and probably better. Same for central / west GA teams going to Macon and Mercer’s stadium. Duluth and McEachern are both on the outer suburbs and have nearly brand new or state of the art playing surfaces, and are both dirt cheap to rent. I would love to see rotating spots like the regions do in the brackets. One year at Columbus State, Valdosta St, Savannah/GaSouthern, U of NorthGa, GCSU/Milledgeville, Kenn St, Ga State maybe even athens at that trade school they have over there. Every region of the state gets to host every 4-5 years.

Every region of the state gets to host every 4-5 years. I'm kind of surprised they don't play some of these state championships at home sites- especially sports like soccer that are simply never going to draw crowds to a neutral site like the football championships do to Mercedes Benz or Georgia State. I remember a few years ago in baseball- which probably compares decently to soccer in terms of high school playoff crowds & interest- Lovett & Westminster had to go to Rome to play their state championship series, even though those two schools are only a few miles apart. Major inconvenience for both sets of players, parents, & fans. I get it- if you're a south Georgia team that has to travel to a metro Atlanta school for a championship game, or vice versa, that's a pain, but at least it's only a pain for one set of fans instead of (likely) both. If you're not going to play at a home site, the championship really should be somewhere in metro Atlanta, because- let's be honest- the odds of a team from outside a 90-minute radius of downtown Atlanta making it to the finals are generally slim. On the girls side there was only one team out of the 32 semifinalists- Towns County in AA- that wasn't within a 90 minute drive of Atlanta. The boys have a little more "geographic diversity", including a team from Savannah (Islands HS in AAAA), but again, the vast majority of the stronger programs from year-to-year are from the metro area or at least a relatively easy drive.

So after tonight, it’s an all Forsyth 7A final on both girls and boys sides.
West vs Lambert for girls South vs Lambert for boys
Makes the finals location even more of a head scratcher. Hopefully at least one of those finals gets scheduled at Duluth.
